Adamawa Assembly dissolves standing committees

The Adamawa State House of Assembly has dissolved all its standing committees.

The dissolution, effected Monday, was a follow-up to a major development on Saturday when four principal officers were impeached and replacements named.

In that exercise, the Deputy Speaker, Emmanuel Tsamdu; Majority Leader, Hassan Mamman Barguma; Deputy Majority Leader, Abubakar Isa; and Deputy Chief Whip, Abdullahi Nyapak lost their positions, giving way to Lumsabani Dilli as the new Deputy Speaker, while Hayatu Mohammed Atiku was elected Majority Leader. Safiyanu Aminu Aliyu became the new Deputy Chief Whip and Sani Shehu was elected Deputy Majority Leader.

The new deputy speaker, Dilli, who presided over Monday’s plenary, announced the dissolution of the standing committees of the House and the constitution of new ones.

The new Committee for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has Alhassan Hammanjoda as chairman, with Saleh Abubakar, Sunday Peters and Mohammed Mutawali as members. Housing and Urban Development are to be chaired by Adamu Usman while Planning Commission is to be headed by Sunday Peters, among others.

The leaders affected in the Saturday impeachment exercise continued their protest by not attending Monday’s plenary.

The impeached deputy speaker, Emmanuel Tsamdu, had led the protest on Saturday, saying the constitutional requirement needed to effect their removal was not met as only 13 members signed the document.

But countering the standpoint of Tsamdu in interaction with newsmen shortly after the Monday plenary, the new deputy speaker, Dilli, said 18 members actually signed the document and that with such development, the removal of the affected persons remained sacrosanct.
