A Look Into Priyanka Chopra And Nick Jonas's Wedding Celebrations

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding is quickly becoming a late contender for the Celebrity Wedding of 2018.

The week-long festivities began in Mumbai on Monday, November 26 with a dinner party. On Wednesday, Chopra’s mother Dr Madhu Chopra invited the wedding party to her Mumbai home for a traditional puja ceremony in celebration of their impending nuptials.

For the occasion, all the guests, including Nick’s brother Joe Jonas and his fiancée Sophie Turner, wore Indian dress. The bride opted for a heavily embellished sky suit, while the groom chose a pink kurta and cream trousers for the occasion. Both wore sunglasses to ward off the glare of snap-happy paparazzi.

That evening, the group flew from Mumbai to Jodhpur, where Chopra attended last-minute fittings at the JW Marriott hotel. Bollywood designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee touched down shortly afterwards, spurring sources to speculate that he might have designed one of the garments for the multiple services and parties.

On Friday, the sangeet was held at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhavan Palace, where both sides of the family performed songs and dances relating to the couple. “And what a performance it was,” Chopra, who wore Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla for the “fierce competition”, said via Instagram afterwards.

Chopra's cousin, Parineeti, said that the family had rehearsed their Bollywood-style piece for days – but, the Jonas family “stumped” them with their lip syncing of Hindi songs. “Damn, we should have known,” she continued, before revealing that the two families had decided to share the trophy.

Of the mehendi, the ritual of applying henna before the wedding, Chopra wrote on Instagram: "One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures. And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so amazing."

Jonas, who let his bride-to-be take the spotlight in a multi-coloured dress with resplendent detail, posted the same series of vibrant pictures and ended the caption with: "Once again we made it our own and it was an afternoon that kicked off the celebrations in the way we both dreamed."

Chopra later took to Instagram Stories to share moments of a Team Bride versus Team Groom cricket match during the mehendi, with a close-up shot of Jonas batting.

Parineeti also gave some insight into the role of Chopra's family on the day: "The job of us bridesmaids was to make sure the bride was happy and comfortable at all times. But we didn’t have to worry about it - coz Nick promised to do it all his life," she said via her own Instagram.

The Christian ceremony, which was officiated by Jonas’s father Paul Kevin Jonas Sr, took place on Saturday. Chopra wore a custom Ralph Lauren gown featuring mother of pearl paillettes, crystal seed beading and Swarovski crystal embellishment, which took a total of 1,826 hours to complete. A strapless column gown made of over two million mother of pearl sequins was worn underneath, and a 75 ft tulle veil completed the resplendent bridal look. Lauren, who invited Chopra as his guest to the Met Gala in 2017, went to the bride-to-be personally with sketches of the dress he imagined creating for her. Prior to this, the designer had made wedding dresses only for his daughter, his daughter-in-law and his niece.

Jonas, meanwhile, was dressed in a custom Ralph Lauren label double-breasted black tuxedo. Inside of the purple lapel of the suit was stitched a small piece of lace from the bride's dress embroidered with the Urdu words "my jaan", which translates to "my life".

Lauren, who also outfitted the bridesmaids and the groomsmen, took to Twitter to congratulate the couple on their wedding day.

For the Hindu ceremony, Chopra wore a red lehenga by Sabyasachi Mukherji accessorised with a Chopard 16-carat oval-shaped diamond headpiece and elaborate necklace comprising 84.50 carats of pear-shaped diamonds set in 18k ethical white gold. "I always knew I wanted a red traditional silhouette for my wedding, but Sabya brought in incredible French embroidery to the mix, and with incredible jewellery and western-inspired veil. It was just such an amalgamation of who I am!" Chopra told Hello! magazine.

"I love that our wedding [was] a religious mash-up," she added. "We [took] beautiful traditions that we both grew up with and we [personalised] them in a way that makes sense for us... It's been incredible to find the commonalities between our beliefs and figuring out how to blend them in a respectful and meaningful way."

Nick noted that the element of the Indian ceremony which had surprised him most was, "Just how thoughtful it [was]… finding the meaning behind every detail really just made me fall in love with the culture even more."

The newlyweds then flew out of Jodhpur for Delhi, where they hosted an additional wedding reception. “People will need vacations after this wedding,” Chopra told Vogue before the extravaganza, and her words certainly proved correct.

Of course, the celebrations were always going to be fabulous. Jonas set the tone when he shut down Tiffany's London flagship to choose a four-carat cushion-cut engagement ring for his bride-to-be in total privacy. The storied jeweller then hosted a bridal shower for Chopra and 100 of her friends in its Blue Box Café in New York, where the likes of Lupita Nyong’o and Kelly Ripa left with goodie bags comprising monogrammed passport cases and champagne. The bride and her hens then spent the weekend in Amsterdam earlier this month, where they supped Malibu on canalboats and formulated new hashtags – #TheJSisters, anyone? – amidst the merriment. From London to NYC, Amsterdam and now India, the couple certainly know how to throw a party.

Returning from a serene honeymoon in Oman, the couple arrived in Mumbai to celebrate Isha Ambani's wedding. A close friend of Chopra's and one of India’s wealthiest heiresses, the newlyweds arrived to celebrate Ambani's wedding in fine couture: Chopra in an embellished Jade two piece by designers Monica Shah and Karishma Swali, and Jonas in a sharp black tuxedo.

And, just when you thought the global celebrations were over, the couple toasted family and friends at a Mumbai reception on December 19. After weeks of vibrant ensembles, the power duo toned their matching palette with shades of blue and slate. Of course, the jewellery was fabulous. Chopra offset her blue lehenga with gold embroidery with a striking Sabyasachi Jewelry Victorian necklace and multiple rings.
