Actor Yemi Blaq has questioned why men are often regarded as people who struggle more with staying faithful in relationships, while women are expected to remain committed as though they never experience temptation.
He raised the question of why society treats faithfulness differently for men and women, suggesting that the expectations placed on both genders are not always the same.
In his words: “Why do we assume that women are naturally monogamous, but men need special discipline to remain faithful?...who tell you say woman no dey experience temptation?”
His question brings attention to a familiar way of looking at relationships, where men are often expected to fight harder against temptation, while women are assumed to be naturally more faithful.
However, experiencing attraction or temptation is not something exclusive to men. Women can also find themselves in situations where they have to make choices about their commitment to a partner.
There is also a difference between feeling attracted to someone and deciding to act on it. Being faithful is ultimately about the decisions people make, regardless of whether they are men or women.
The actor's position challenges the idea that men should carry most of the responsibility for resisting temptation in relationships, while women are automatically considered less likely to stray.
It also raises a question about the standards people use when judging infidelity. If both men and women can experience temptation, should the expectations around loyalty not apply equally to both?
For Yemi Blaq he assumption that women do not experience temptation deserves to be questioned, just as men should not automatically be regarded as less capable of remaining faithful.
