Nollywood actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod has sparked conversations after revealing that he would prioritise his acting career over his marriage, insisting that his passion for filmmaking remains one of the most important aspects of his life.
The Yoruba film star made the disclosure during an interview with content creator Kasnasty Sugar on YouTube, where he spoke about the demands of the entertainment industry and the difficulties creative professionals encounter when trying to maintain a balance between their careers and family responsibilities.
According to Kunle Afod, people who are genuinely passionate about their professions often develop a strong attachment to their work, sometimes placing it ahead of their personal relationships.
He maintained that acting is more than a source of income for him, describing it as a calling he is prepared to pursue throughout his lifetime.
The actor explained that partners of entertainers sometimes struggle to understand the level of commitment required by their profession, particularly when work responsibilities take up considerable time and attention.
He suggested that someone who truly loves acting might find it difficult to abandon the profession for the sake of a romantic relationship.
Kunle Afod also spoke about how his dedication to filmmaking has affected his relationship with his children. He disclosed that there have been occasions when he went as long as six months without contacting them.
The filmmaker further revealed that he had opportunities to relocate abroad several years ago but declined them because he was unwilling to abandon the career he had built in the Nigerian movie industry.
His comments have attracted attention partly because of the reported difficulties surrounding his marriage to Desola Afod, with whom he shares four sons.
In October 2022, Desola publicly announced that she had left her husband, although subsequent developments suggested that the couple had reconciled.
However, fresh reports in February 2026 renewed speculation about their marriage after claims emerged that Desola had moved out of their matrimonial home.
By October 2026, reports were referring to Desola as the actor's estranged wife following a disagreement involving her and actress Wumi Toriola.
Despite the reported challenges, Kunle Afod has occasionally expressed admiration for his wife publicly. In August, he celebrated Desola on her birthday, describing her as an amazing woman and a loving mother.
Kunle Afod remains active in the Yoruba movie industry, working across acting, filmmaking and directing. His latest remarks have once again brought attention to the sacrifices entertainers make to sustain their careers and the possible effects such commitments can have on their family lives.
