Nigerian rapper Tochukwu Ojogwu, popularly known as Odumodublvck, has said the pressure to achieve commercial success in the music industry can push some artistes to explore unconventional means, including voodoo practices, in their pursuit of hit songs.
The rapper made the claim during an appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, where he discussed the difficulties musicians face in producing songs that gain widespread acceptance and commercial success.
According to him, making a hit record is far more difficult than many people realise, as an artiste’s talent and hard work do not necessarily guarantee that a song will become successful.
Odumodublvck explained that some musicians could spend years working on their craft without recording a song that enjoys widespread popularity. He added that the struggle to achieve such success sometimes leads artistes to become frustrated.
His comments have drawn attention to the intense competition within the Nigerian music industry, where commercial performance, streaming numbers, audience reception and hit records often influence how musicians are perceived.
Odumodublvck Speaks On Pressure To Make Hit Songs
During the podcast conversation, the rapper suggested that the desire to record a commercially successful song could become overwhelming for musicians who have yet to achieve that milestone.
He alleged that some artistes resort to spiritual practices in an attempt to secure the success they have been unable to achieve through their music.
“Getting a hit song is not easy. Sometimes people even do jazz to get one. That is why you see some artists crashing out when they struggle to get a hit,” he said.
The statement reflects the pressure some musicians may experience as they attempt to remain relevant and compete with colleagues whose songs regularly attract large audiences.
In an industry where hit songs can significantly influence an artiste’s popularity, bookings and commercial opportunities, the inability to produce one can become a source of concern.
However, Odumodublvck’s remarks also highlight the unpredictable nature of music success. A song may receive considerable promotion and investment without achieving the level of acceptance its creators expect.
Rapper Praises Burna Boy, Wizkid And Davido
While discussing the challenges of producing hit songs, Odumodublvck singled out three of Nigeria’s biggest music stars, Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido, for their ability to deliver commercially successful records over several years.
He said their consistency deserved recognition, considering how difficult it could be for musicians to achieve even one widely accepted hit during their careers.
“Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido have been dropping hit songs consistently for years. You have to respect that. Some artistes never get a hit song throughout their careers,” he stated.
His comments highlighted the distinction between having a successful music career and consistently producing songs that dominate the charts and attract widespread attention.
Although many artistes release music regularly, only a few manage to maintain a strong presence with records that connect with audiences over extended periods.
Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido have remained prominent figures in the Nigerian and international music scenes, with their music attracting listeners across different markets.
Odumodublvck’s recognition of their consistency also points to the effort required to sustain commercial success in an industry where musical tastes and audience preferences can change quickly.
Success In The Nigerian Music Industry
The rapper’s comments have also brought renewed attention to the expectations placed on musicians, particularly emerging artistes trying to establish themselves.
For many performers, recording a hit song can open doors to bigger performances, collaborations, endorsements and wider recognition. However, the absence of such a record does not necessarily mean an artiste lacks talent or has failed in their career.
Odumodublvck’s position was that achieving a hit should not be treated as an easy accomplishment, especially when some musicians spend their entire careers without recording one.
His remarks offer a glimpse into the competitive environment surrounding Nigerian music and the different pressures artistes face while pursuing commercial recognition.
