The Nigerian music industry has grown tremendously over the years, with Afrobeats gaining international recognition and producing artistes who command huge audiences across the world. However, rapper Slimcase believes something is changing within the culture, and he is not particularly impressed with the direction things are heading.
For him, the problem goes beyond music releases, streaming numbers or the ability of artistes to secure international deals. He appears more concerned about the changing attitude towards celebrities and the way fame is now perceived in the entertainment industry.
One thing Slimcase seems to miss is the kind of admiration that used to surround popular musicians. There was a time when becoming a recognised artiste came with a certain level of respect and excitement. Fans looked forward to seeing their favourite stars, hearing from them and following their activities. That feeling, according to the rapper's observation, is gradually disappearing.
He also believes the distance between celebrities and their fans has become almost nonexistent. With social media giving people unlimited access to their favourite entertainers, the mystery that once surrounded fame has seemingly disappeared. What was once considered special has become ordinary, making it increasingly difficult for artistes to maintain that larger-than-life image.
Another issue he points out is the growing perception that everybody is successful, wealthy and famous. In a space where almost everyone presents an image of luxury and success, standing out has become more difficult. The things that once made certain musicians exceptional no longer seem to carry the same weight.
Slimcase also links the situation to social media algorithms, suggesting that the way online platforms operate has contributed to the changing atmosphere within the music industry.
The rapper expressed his concerns in a post, writing:
"Signs afrobeat is falling off*
Nobody gives a fork about faves anymore
Star power getting weaker by the day
See finish pandemic amoung our faves
Everybody is a star everybody is rich
Scarcity don turn depression u been out there don cause see finish
Soci@l medi@ algorithm ruined it all
Doom is around the corner
Doom is coming for us all".
Slimcase believes the Afrobeats scene is not as exciting as it used to be. While Nigerian music continues to reach new audiences around the world, he feels the excitement around artistes and celebrity status is gradually fading. For him, being famous no longer seems to carry the same weight it once did.
