The Nigerian film industry has enjoyed a remarkable year in 2026, with several productions making impressive commercial and critical strides. From box office successes and culturally rooted historical dramas to films earning international recognition, Nollywood has continued to demonstrate its growing influence both locally and globally.
The year has seen filmmakers explore different genres, attract audiences to cinemas and tell stories that reflect Nigeria’s history, culture and contemporary experiences. While some productions have achieved impressive financial returns, others have gained attention for their storytelling, performances and recognition at international film festivals.
As the year approaches its final stretch, here are some of the movies that have helped shape Nollywood’s journey in 2026.
Record-Breaking And Critically Acclaimed Movies
One of the biggest commercial highlights of the year is Call of My Life, which emerged as the highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2026, according to the figures provided. Released in May, the romantic comedy was directed by Dammy Twitch and written by Uzoamaka Power.
The film reportedly generated ₦498.4 million at the Nigerian box office, placing it at the top of the year’s chart. Its performance has made it one of the most commercially successful local productions of 2026.
Love and New Notes followed closely, securing the second position with ₦400.17 million. The romantic drama attracted considerable audience interest and established itself as another major box office success.
Also making the list is The Return of Arinzo, an action-packed sequel that earned ₦347.8 million. Its commercial performance placed it among the year’s biggest cinema releases, further demonstrating audience interest in high-stakes Nigerian productions.
Onobiren (A Woman’s Story) also recorded an impressive performance, generating ₦138.2 million. The emotionally driven production connected with viewers through its storytelling and earned a place among the notable releases of the year.
Another production that crossed the ₦100 million mark is Efunroye: The Unicorn. The historical epic reportedly grossed ₦103.8 million, adding to the growing list of Nigerian films exploring historical figures and cultural heritage through cinema.
Beyond box office figures, Lady, directed by Olive Nwosu, earned international attention at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. The internationally co-produced feature received the Special Jury Award for Acting Ensemble, giving its cast and production team recognition on a major global platform.
Documentary filmmaking also had a significant moment with Mothers of Chibok, released in February. Directed by Oscar-recognised filmmaker Joel Kachi Benson, the documentary explores themes of hope, memory and resilience through the experiences surrounding the Chibok community.
Historical And Cultural Stories Take Centre Stage
August 2026 witnessed the release of several productions that placed Nigerian history, traditions and cultural identity at the centre of their storytelling.
Among them was King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos, directed by Adebayo Tijani. The historical epic revisited the warfare and political struggles of 19th-century Lagos, bringing an important period in the city’s history to the screen.
The production stood out for its ambitious subject matter and focus on historical storytelling, contributing to Nollywood’s growing interest in films that explore the country’s past.
Another notable release was Ikenga: The Last Festival, a cultural suspense thriller directed by Darlington Obodo. The film combined traditional beliefs with contemporary tensions, using cultural elements to build its suspense.
Apaara, a psychological drama, also attracted attention for its writing and performances. Its intense storytelling added another dimension to the range of films released during the period.
Festive Season Brings More Anticipated Releases
With the final weeks of 2026 approaching, Nollywood is preparing for another busy cinema season as filmmakers line up productions for the November and December holiday period.
One of the anticipated releases is Five Figurines, scheduled to arrive in cinemas on November 13. Directed by Akay Mason, the mystery thriller features Ini Edo and Chimezie Imo in leading roles.
Extra Mile is another production expected to attract cinema audiences. The legal and crime drama, directed by Kayode Kasum, is scheduled for November 27. Its cast includes Femi Branch, Tina Mba, Mofe Duncan, Waje and Kehinde Bankole.
Other titles expected to feature in the late-December cinema season are Loving Itohan, Dear Ajayi and No Fury. The three productions are scheduled for sequential releases as distributors and filmmakers target audiences during the festive period.
The final releases could further strengthen what has already been a busy year for Nigerian cinema.
From commercial successes to international recognition and stories rooted in Nigerian culture, 2026 has offered Nollywood several important milestones. With more films still expected before the year ends, the industry’s performance during the festive season will provide another measure of its progress.
