Nigerian comedian and social commentator Freedom Atsepoyi, widely known as Mr Jollof, has criticised former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege over his warning to anyone planning to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 general elections in Delta State.
Mr Jollof believes that while electoral malpractice should not be encouraged, threatening people with death is not an appropriate way to address the issue. He expressed concern that such statements could be misunderstood by supporters and potentially lead to attacks on innocent people.
The comedian argued that nobody should take the law into their own hands, regardless of the allegations against another person. He maintained that anyone suspected of rigging an election should be dealt with through the proper legal process rather than through violence.
He also pointed out that political tensions can easily influence how people interpret statements made by influential politicians. According to him, a person could become a target simply because of their political affiliation or because someone wrongly suspects them of interfering with an election.
Reacting to Omo-Agege's comments, Mr Jollof said:
"Nobody get the constitutional right to take the life of anybody even if the person dey rig election. Na the law go take its course. As e no favour you now na do-or-d!e affair.
So, sir, don’t preach something that shouldn’t be preached. The way things are now, our people can be overzealous. Someone may not even be rigging an election; the person could just be walking by, or someone might be angry because you don’t belong to the same political party. They could end up k+lling that person and claiming it was because of election rigging.
“So, when you dey make some kind statements as a senator and elder statesman, at your age, e get some kind talk wey you no suppose talk o.."
His criticism came after Omo-Agege warned against attempts to manipulate the 2027 general elections in Delta State. The former Deputy Senate President made the comments while addressing supporters at a campaign event in Uvwie Local Government Area.
During the gathering, Omo-Agege used the expression "rig and d!e" while warning those who might attempt to interfere with the electoral process. He also suggested that there would be no room for the usual legal battles after the election, insisting that those who attempted to manipulate the results would face resistance.
The statement has become the subject of criticism, with Mr Jollof focusing on the possible consequences of using such language in a politically charged environment.
For the comedian, protecting the credibility of an election should never become an excuse for violence. He maintained that political leaders and public office holders have a responsibility to consider how their words could be understood and acted upon by their supporters.
He further stressed that disagreements over political parties or election results should not put anyone's life at risk. In his view, the law remains the proper channel for addressing electoral offences, and no individual should be encouraged to take matters into their own hands.
