At 33, Ghanaian singer Efya had a clear idea of what she wanted to focus on, and getting married was not at the top of her list. Six years later, the 39-year-old musician has taken a new step in her personal life, marrying Nigerian singer Tómi Thomas in a traditional wedding ceremony in Accra.
The couple celebrated their marriage on Friday, November 6, 2026, with family, friends and several personalities from Ghana's entertainment industry present. It was a special occasion for the two musicians, who have now officially begun a new chapter together.
The wedding also brings a fresh perspective to comments Efya made during an interview in 2020. At the time, she was not dismissing marriage or suggesting that she would never settle down. Rather, she explained that she was more concerned about her music career and was not in a hurry to become someone's wife.
Her position was that marriage should happen when she was ready, not because of pressure or expectations from other people. Any man interested in taking that step with her would have to be patient until she felt the time was right.
That was where Efya stood at the time. Her priorities were centred on her career, and she wanted the freedom to concentrate on her work without rushing into a major personal commitment.
Now, six years after that interview, she has found herself at a different point in life. Her marriage to Tómi Thomas shows that her earlier position was about timing rather than a decision to stay unmarried permanently.
News of their plans to marry first became public in February 2026, when their families met for a knocking ceremony on Valentine's Day. The gathering marked an important step towards the union, although the couple's management later clarified that it was not the completion of the traditional marriage rites.
Those rites have now been celebrated, with the November 6 ceremony bringing both families together in Accra.
The occasion also attracted several well-known Ghanaian personalities. Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie attended, alongside Sister Derby, Fella Makafui, Hajia4Reall, Efia Odo and Kafui Danku.
For Efya, whose name has been associated with Ghanaian music for years, marriage marks another important part of her life beyond the stage and recording studio.
Her 2020 comments are worth remembering because they put the story into proper context. She did not say marriage was something she would never consider. She simply wanted to get there on her own terms.
At 39, she has now taken that step with Tómi Thomas, bringing their relationship into a new chapter.
