Actor Yemi Sholade has made his position on “Happy New Month” messages clear, saying he would rather not receive them on WhatsApp.

For Sholade, the beginning of another month does not carry the same significance as the start of a new year. He questioned why people continue to send greetings every month after everyone has already welcomed the New Year in January.

He explained that while a new year marks a period that cannot be repeated once it has passed, the months will continue to come around every year. Using 2026 as an example, he pointed out that once the year ends, it cannot simply return, unlike individual months that will appear again in subsequent years.

According to him, this is why he sees no need for the constant monthly greetings and forwarded messages that fill up his WhatsApp.

“I normally block people whenever they send me Happy New month messages on my WhatsApp because what’s new about the month?

We already had Happy New Year, like year 2026 now which we can’t have anymore and we already celebrated happy new year since January so why are you greeting me every month?

We will definitely still have August month by next year but we can’t have yr 2026 anymore, so let’s forget about the months and just focus on the year abeg

Some people would even be sending or forwarding messages to me every month and my phone will become so hot, immediately l block them because l don’t have time for rubbis”.

His comments centre mainly on the volume of messages he receives, particularly when people forward greetings to him every month. Rather than finding the messages pleasant or meaningful, he says they become a source of annoyance when they repeatedly arrive on his phone.

The actor’s point is straightforward: he would prefer people to stop sending him the regular messages that accompany the beginning of a new month. In his view, the attention given to each new month could instead be reserved for the year itself.

His remarks also show that his decision to block people is not necessarily about personal disagreements with them. Instead, he says the repeated monthly messages are enough reason for him to cut off the communication, especially when they keep coming from different people.

For Sholade, the yearly celebration already serves the purpose of welcoming a fresh beginning, making the monthly greetings unnecessary in his own view.
