Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has given a simple but personal explanation for how he has managed to remain married for 57 years.
The actor, who married at a young age, spoke about his marriage during his appearance in Accra, Ghana. Rather than presenting himself as someone who has all the answers about marriage, Edochie was quick to make it clear that he does not consider himself perfect.
For him, part of staying committed has been avoiding situations that could easily take his attention away from his home and family. He also credited his Christian faith and the way he spends his time when he is not working.
He said:
“I married early. I've been married for 57 years. It is difficult to keep, and I don't get distracted easily. And that's one of the biggest blessings I have. I'm a very big Christian. Yeah. I'm a big Christian, and women don't distract me. I'm just being honest with you. It doesn't mean I'm a wonderful man. Most of the time I'm inside the house, I'm playing classical music, or I'm reading some material. I'm always very busy doing one thing or the other. Don't ask me that kind of question again.”
Edochie’s answer was as direct as it was personal. He did not describe marriage as something that is automatically easy because two people have been together for many years. Instead, he acknowledged that keeping a marriage requires effort and, in his case, a deliberate decision not to allow distractions to interfere.
His reference to his Christian faith also formed an important part of his explanation. Edochie said his beliefs have played a major role in the way he approaches marriage and his personal life.
The actor also gave an idea of what his everyday life looks like away from the public eye. He said he spends much of his time at home listening to classical music, reading and keeping himself occupied with different activities.
“I’m always very busy doing one thing or the other,” he said.
Edochie has been married to his wife, Josephine, for 57 years, making their marriage one of the longest-known unions among Nigeria’s veteran entertainers.
While many people may expect a dramatic explanation for such a long marriage, Edochie’s own account is fairly simple: he married young, remains committed to his faith, keeps himself occupied and says he does not allow other women to distract him.
For the veteran actor, those choices have helped him maintain a marriage that has lasted more than five decades.
