A woman has appealed to the government to look into the rising cost of Titus fish after buying a small quantity for ₦10,000, saying the price is becoming difficult for ordinary people to cope with.
In a video, the woman expressed her frustration over how much she had to pay for the fish, questioning why a quantity that cost her ₦10,000 was not enough to meet her needs, especially when she still had other food items to buy.
She also questioned those involved in producing and selling Titus fish, wondering why it had become so expensive compared to what she remembered from her childhood.
She said:
“Please, I am calling out people who are selling Titus (fish). If you know you are the one manufacturing Titus, I am calling you out. This is ₦10,000.
“When we were small, they told us that fish is a natural thing found in water, but I don’t understand what is happening now. Now that you are farming Titus, I beg you, please. I bought this Titus for ₦10,000.
“How much are they giving me to go to the market and cook that I would buy only this for ₦10,000? You people should pity us. If you know who are rich people, sell it to them. We who are managing, please help us.
“This one alone is ₦10,000, and I have not even bought other things.
“Please, if you know you are in charge of Titus, I am calling you out on social media. Please, government, search for them. Please, let justice take its course.”
The woman questioned how families could afford to prepare meals when a single item on their shopping list could take up a significant portion of their money. She appealed to fish sellers to consider the financial situation of people who struggle to meet their daily needs.
Her complaint also touched on the wider cost of preparing meals, as buying fish is only one part of the expenses involved in cooking for a household. Other ingredients and basic food items still need to be purchased, making it harder for people working with limited budgets to manage their spending.
She urged those selling Titus fish to consider customers who cannot afford to pay high prices, suggesting that sellers who want to charge such amounts should focus on wealthier buyers instead.
The woman also called on the government to investigate the situation, expressing her desire for action over what she considers an unreasonable price for the quantity of fish she received.
Her appeal is a typical reflection of the financial pressure consumers can face when the cost of everyday food items rises, particularly for those trying to stretch their income to cover household expenses.
