Nollywood actress and filmmaker Uzoamaka Power has opened up about the challenges she faced while growing up, revealing that her father’s perception of acting made her hesitant to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

Uzoamaka Power disclosed this during an appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, where she discussed her journey into filmmaking, her relationship with her father and her determination to follow her passion despite the reservations of those closest to her.

She explained that her father held a negative view of the acting profession and often criticised actresses whenever the family watched films together.

According to Uzoamaka Power, his comments about their dressing, education and lifestyle contributed to her initial fear of pursuing her ambition.

She recalled that her father frequently questioned how actresses managed their academic responsibilities while working in an industry he considered unsuitable. His reactions to women on television made her apprehensive about openly following her dreams.

Despite the discouragement, Uzoamaka Power said she had always felt strongly that acting was the path she was meant to take. She maintained that her confidence in her abilities and belief in her future success helped her remain committed to her ambition.

The filmmaker also acknowledged that her father’s objections were partly motivated by concern for her future. She understood that he was worried about the financial uncertainty associated with working in the entertainment industry and preferred that she pursue a conventional office job.

Uzoamaka Power recognised the reasoning behind her father’s concerns but remained convinced that she could build a successful career doing something she genuinely enjoyed.

Beyond discussing her family’s initial reservations, she also addressed how people perceive her personality, particularly suggestions that she may come across as arrogant.

Uzoamaka Power explained that she had never believed in diminishing herself or concealing her abilities simply to make others comfortable. She said her confidence came from understanding both her strengths and weaknesses.

She added that she remained conscious of her limitations, recognised areas where she needed improvement and understood the importance of being willing to learn.

According to the actress, being comfortable with herself should not automatically be interpreted as a lack of humility. She maintained that she preferred to remain authentic rather than alter her personality to satisfy other people’s expectations.

Uzoamaka Power has established herself as an actress, writer and director in Nigeria’s film industry. Her screen credits include Mami Wata, The Weekend and the television series Diiche.

She also wrote and stars in the romantic comedy Call of My Life, in which she portrays Soluchi, a call centre agent whose experiences with heartbreak eventually open the door to a new romantic relationship.

Her account highlights the personal challenges that can accompany the pursuit of a creative career, particularly when family expectations differ from an individual's professional aspirations.
