A family in Yobe State has been hit by an unusually painful loss after twin sisters, both health professionals, died just two days apart.

The sisters were Dr Hadiyah Usman Abdullahi, a medical doctor, and Aidah Usman Abdullahi, a pharmacist. They were the daughters of Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru.

Hadiyah died on Friday, October 2, 2026, after battling complications associated with sickle cell disease. She had been receiving treatment at FMC Nguru for about a week after suffering a sickle cell crisis.

Her death was followed by her burial later that day, with funeral prayers held at the Emir’s Palace.

At the time Hadiyah was undergoing treatment, her twin sister Aidah was also receiving medical care at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Aidah, however, reportedly responded to treatment and was discharged from the hospital.

For a short while, it appeared that the family would have to cope with the loss of one sister while the other recovered.

But two days later, tragedy struck again.

Aidah went to Hadiyah’s grave after attending her sister’s burial. According to the account, she suddenly fainted after visiting the grave and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

She later d!ed on Sunday, October 4.

The deaths meant that the twin sisters, who had spent their lives side by side and gone into two different areas of the healthcare profession, were lost within the space of a weekend.

Hadiyah had become a medical doctor, while Aidah trained as a pharmacist. Their careers also placed them within the healthcare system, a profession closely connected to the work of their mother, Professor Usman.

The Federal Medical Centre, Nguru confirmed Aidah’s death in a post on its Facebook page. In the message, the hospital referred to her as “the second twin” of Professor Usman.

The circumstances surrounding the sisters’ deaths have made the loss particularly difficult for the family. Hadiyah’s death came first, followed by her burial. Then, just two days later, Aidah, who had reportedly recovered enough to leave hospital, also died.

Both d£aths were linked to complications associated with sickle cell disease.

For Professor Usman, the loss is not only that of two daughters but of twin sisters who had both built careers in healthcare. One had become a doctor and the other a pharmacist.

The family is now mourning two young women who died within days of each other, leaving behind a story marked by medicine, sisterhood and an exceptionally painful sequence of events.
