Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has expressed frustration over the growing tendency of film producers to cast him in similar roles, particularly characters popularly described as “Odogwu,” insisting that he has more to offer beyond the familiar screen persona.
Uzor Arukwe made his position known during an interview on The Creativitea Podcast, where he spoke about the pressure to continue playing characters that have contributed to his rising popularity in the Nigerian film industry.
According to Uzor Arukwe, many producers appear reluctant to explore his versatility, preferring to cast him in roles they believe will attract audiences and guarantee financial returns.
The actor lamented that the repeated offers were becoming overwhelming, arguing that an actor should not be confined to a particular character type simply because audiences have embraced previous performances.
“All the producers in Nollywood now want to kill me with Odogwu character. You can’t put me in a box,” Uzor Arukwe said.
The actor also challenged filmmakers to experiment with different characters and allow him to demonstrate other aspects of his acting abilities.
Uzor Arukwe noted that the role that helped establish his popularity was made possible because someone was willing to take a chance on him. He believes other producers should show similar confidence by developing fresh characters that would allow him to explore different dimensions of his craft.
“The same way someone took a chance on that character, you can also create another character and give to me,” Uzor Arukwe added.
His comments highlight the challenges actors can face when a particular performance becomes closely associated with their public image.
While such roles can increase recognition and create more employment opportunities, repeatedly playing similar characters may also limit an actor’s opportunities to demonstrate versatility.
For Uzor Arukwe, the concern appears to be finding a balance between the characters audiences enjoy watching and the opportunity to take on unfamiliar roles that can challenge him professionally.
The development comes shortly after Uzor Arukwe’s manager, Mautin Tairu, popularly known as Mr M, acknowledged sharing some fans’ concerns about the actor’s frequent portrayal of what they describe as “igbotic” characters.
Mautin Tairu made the admission while responding to a fan on X who expressed dissatisfaction with Uzor Arukwe’s repeated shouting in such roles.
The fan, identified as R. Ekpedeme, had called for the actor to take a break from the character type, prompting the manager to acknowledge the complaint.
“Uzor needs to leave the igbotic roles for a while. I need a break from the shouting,” the fan wrote.
The manager’s response suggested that the criticism was not limited to sections of the viewing public, as even someone closely involved in the actor’s career could understand the desire for a change.
Uzor Arukwe’s latest remarks have brought renewed attention to the conversation about typecasting in Nollywood and the commercial considerations that influence casting decisions.
Although familiar characters can help actors build a strong following, Uzor Arukwe’s appeal suggests he wants filmmakers to look beyond established formulas and give him opportunities to portray different personalities.
The actor’s message is clear: he appreciates the role that brought him recognition but does not want that success to determine every character he plays in the future.
