Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has indicated that she is ready to put her brief boxing career behind her and return to what she knows best after losing to reality TV star Phyna in a celebrity boxing contest.
The actress suffered a fourth-round knockout during the bout, which took place on Thursday at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The fight was organised as part of Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring event and marked the first female celebrity boxing contest under the series.
Phyna was declared the winner and reportedly received a N50 million cash prize for her victory.
Following the contest, Nkechi Blessing reflected on her experience in a series of posts shared on Instagram.
Despite the defeat, she maintained that stepping into the ring was an achievement in itself, particularly because she had only spent two days preparing for the fight.
The actress described herself as a champion regardless of the outcome and joked that she was ready to return to the entertainment industry rather than continue pursuing boxing.
She wrote that it was time to return to making films because boxing was not her profession.
However, Nkechi Blessing did not completely rule out another appearance in the ring. In another social media post, she responded positively when asked whether she would participate in another boxing contest, suggesting that she could consider doing it again in the future.
The actress also revealed that she had never physically fought anyone before taking part in the celebrity bout. Despite being unfamiliar with boxing, she said she found the courage to compete in front of a large audience.
For Nkechi, the event also carried an emotional meaning beyond the competition. She dedicated the experience to her late mother, Gloria Sunday, and revealed that she had hoped her mother would somehow be part of the occasion.
The actress recalled requesting that her mother’s favourite song be played during the event and wondered whether she was watching from above.
Nkechi Blessing expressed appreciation to Balmoral Promotions and Bet9ja for giving her the opportunity to participate in the event. She described the experience as memorable despite the result.
The fight itself followed a period of public exchanges between Nkechi Blessing and Phyna before both women eventually agreed to settle their differences inside the boxing ring.
The celebrity boxing event attracted several entertainment personalities and featured other notable contests.
Skit maker Carter Efe also faced rapper Speed Darlington, while Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah competed against Godday “Zodsolo” Appah for the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship.
After defeating Nkechi Blessing, Phyna turned her attention to another potential opponent, challenging actress Etinosa Idemudia to a celebrity boxing contest. Etinosa subsequently accepted the challenge.
For now, Nkechi Blessing appears focused on returning to acting, although her willingness to consider another boxing appearance means her brief venture into the sport may not necessarily be over.
