Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has urged people to remain committed to their personal goals, even when romantic relationships become part of their lives.

The actress pointed out that achieving success often comes after years of hard work, sacrifices and sleepless nights. However, once things begin to fall into place, other aspects of life can demand attention and sometimes take people away from what they have worked so hard to build.

According to Akindele, romantic relationships can become one of those distractions if people are not careful about maintaining a balance between their love lives and personal ambitions.

She made it clear that there is nothing wrong with falling in love, but being in a relationship should not mean forgetting one's identity, abandoning personal goals or placing another person above everything else.

In her words:

“You work so hard, sleepless nights, sacrifices, building something from scratch. Then come the accolades! But you see, distractions will come in different forms, sometimes even in the form of love.

“Nothing wrong with falling in love o! Just don't lose yourself. Know your worth, stay focused and love yourself first. I'm preaching to myself too.!”

Her message centres on the importance of knowing one's worth and keeping personal ambitions alive, regardless of relationship status.

Building a career, running a business or working towards a major life goal requires consistency and determination. It can take years of effort before the results become visible, and protecting that progress often means making difficult choices about how time and energy are spent.

Relationships can bring happiness and companionship, but problems may arise when someone begins to neglect their own needs, interests or plans to keep a partner happy. Akindele's advice is a reminder that loving another person and taking care of oneself do not have to be mutually exclusive.

She also acknowledged that her message applies to her personally, ending her statement with, "I'm preaching to myself too...!" That part of her comment suggests that the advice is not simply directed at others but is also a reminder she recognises for herself.

Rather than suggesting that people should avoid relationships, the actress encouraged them to approach love without losing sight of who they are and what they hope to achieve.

Her central point is straightforward 'fall in love, but don't abandon yourself in the process'. A healthy relationship should leave room for both partners to grow, pursue their ambitions and maintain their sense of self.
