Nigerian singer Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy, says building a career outside the P-Square duo has been a smoother experience for him because he was already involved in several aspects of the group's music before the split.

The singer explained that his transition into a solo artist did not come with the kind of challenges people might expect. Having worked as a producer, songwriter and vocalist during his time with P-Square, he believes he was well prepared to continue making music independently.

For Rudeboy, the change was less about learning an entirely new way of working and more about continuing what he had already been doing, but with greater control over the final decisions.

"Transitioning into a solo artist was less stressful for me. Because it was the same me that was doing everything in the group, with due respect.

I am the producer, writer, and singer. So, moving as a group, it is still the same thing. As I said, being a solo artist is less stressful. Inasmuch as I have a team, nobody is going to question me. I have more creative control. It is easy for me."

His comments point to the importance of creative independence in his career. While performing as part of a duo involves working under a shared identity, pursuing a solo career allows an artist to make more decisions about the direction of their music.

Rudeboy also made it clear that working independently does not mean he has to do everything without assistance. He acknowledged that he still has a team around him, but the difference is that he has more freedom to decide how he wants his work to sound and develop.

That level of control can make a difference for an artist who is already familiar with songwriting, production and performance. Rather than depending on another artiste to determine the creative direction, Rudeboy can take the lead and work with his team to bring his ideas to life.

P-Square, made up of twin brothers Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye, became one of Nigeria's most recognised music acts, releasing hit songs and building a strong following across Africa and beyond. Their split marked the end of a successful partnership, with both brothers eventually pursuing separate musical careers.

For Paul, however, the experience of moving forward as Rudeboy appears to have been a natural progression, given the responsibilities he says he already handled within the group.

His explanation offers his own perspective on why the transition felt manageable. Rather than viewing solo music as a completely different undertaking, he sees it as an opportunity to continue using his existing skills while enjoying greater freedom over his creative decisions.
