Nollywood actress Eniola Badmus has defended her decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu amid criticism over her political affiliation, insisting that every Nigerian has the democratic right to choose a preferred candidate.
Eniola Badmus made her position known during an appearance on comedian Isbae U’s podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask, where she addressed the negative reactions she has received for openly backing the president.
The actress maintained that she would not abandon her political position simply because some people disagreed with her choice.
She also stressed that democracy allows individuals to support politicians and political parties of their preference without being subjected to criticism for their decisions.
According to Eniola Badmus, much of the backlash against her stems from her support for Tinubu, rather than other aspects of her public life.
She reaffirmed her commitment to the president, making it clear that opposition from critics would not change her stance.
“The only reason they come at me is just that I support the president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. And whether you like it or not, on that mandate, me, Eniola Badmus, I am still standing,” she said.
Eniola Badmus further argued that Nigerians should be allowed to exercise their political choices freely, regardless of whether others agree with them.
She explained that she respects the decisions of people who support different candidates and does not believe anyone should be condemned for their political preferences.
“Everybody has the right to do whatever they want. It’s called democracy. Follow whoever you want to follow; I don’t criticise anyone for following whoever,” Eniola Badmus added.
Her comments have once again brought attention to the relationship between celebrities, political participation and public opinion in Nigeria.
Entertainment personalities often attract significant attention when they openly endorse political candidates, particularly during periods of intense political debate.
While some supporters appreciate celebrities who express their political convictions, others question their choices and publicly challenge their positions.
