Gehgeh has taken a swipe at VeryDarkMan over his comments about Davido’s involvement in Nigerian politics, arguing that the singer should not be threatened or discouraged from speaking on issues affecting the country.
The disagreement centres on VDM’s warning to Davido against getting involved in politics again. Gehgeh believes the statement was unnecessary and questions why VDM appears to have a problem with the singer expressing his views on political matters.
According to Gehgeh, VDM’s relationship with Burna Boy may be affecting how he views Davido. He suggested that the situation could have turned what should be a disagreement between two public figures into something more personal.
He said:
“VeryDarkMan’s relationship with Burna Boy is making him see Davido as his enemy. Otherwise, why would he come online and say, ‘If them born Davido well, make he put mouth for any politics in this country again, that you will wash him down’? That statement is wrong in all ramifications. You’re not more Nigerian than Davido.”
Gehgeh’s main concern is the suggestion that Davido should stay away from politics or face the consequences. He argued that being a celebrity does not take away anyone’s right to discuss political issues or express an opinion about the direction of the country.
For him, the issue goes beyond whether VDM agrees with Davido’s political views. People can disagree over political choices, question one another’s opinions and challenge statements they believe are wrong. However, Gehgeh believes threatening someone for wanting to participate in political discussions crosses a line.
He also questioned the idea that Davido should be treated differently because of his status in the entertainment industry or his previous involvement in political conversations. As a Nigerian, the singer has the same right as any other citizen to speak about the country's affairs.
Gehgeh’s criticism also brings attention to the perceived tension surrounding Davido and Burna Boy, two of Nigeria’s biggest music stars. While disagreements between public figures are not unusual, Gehgeh appears concerned that VDM’s association with Burna Boy could be influencing his position on Davido.
His comments make it clear that he does not believe VDM should dictate whether Davido can participate in political discussions. In his view, no individual has a greater claim to being Nigerian simply because of their personal opinions, political positions or disagreements with other public figures.
Ultimately, Gehgeh believes Davido should be allowed to make his own decisions about political involvement without being intimidated. Whether or not people agree with the singer’s views, Gehgeh maintains that the right to speak about Nigeria's politics should not be reserved for a select group of people.
