Animals, an upcoming crime thriller directed by Ben Affleck, is set to premiere in select theatres and on Netflix on October 9, 2026.
The 106-minute film brings together a story of kidnapping, ransom, deception and difficult choices, with Affleck also taking on the lead role.
Written by Connor O. McIntyre, Billy Ray and Ben Affleck, Animals centres on a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife after their son is kidnapped.
The incident turns their lives upside down and places the couple in a race against time as they attempt to secure the ransom demanded for their son’s release.
A Family Caught In A Dangerous Situation
The story begins with what is described as a parent’s worst nightmare — the kidnapping of a child.
For Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate, and his wife, Abigail, the situation quickly becomes a desperate fight to bring their son home.
The couple must scramble to raise and pay a high-stakes ransom within hours. With time running out, they are forced to make decisions under intense pressure.
However, the situation soon becomes more complicated than simply finding the money.
Their attempt to secure the ransom draws them into a dangerous web of deception. As they struggle to navigate the circumstances surrounding their son’s kidnapping, the choices they make begin to threaten their lives.
The film therefore combines the urgency of a kidnapping thriller with a story about the consequences of decisions made when people are pushed to their limits.
Ben Affleck Leads The Cast
Affleck stars as Mark Kimball, the mayoral candidate at the centre of the story.
Kerry Washington plays Abigail, Mark’s wife, who finds herself confronting the terrifying reality of their son’s disappearance.
The cast also features Steven Yeun, Gillian Anderson, Adriana Paz and Luis Gerardo Méndez.
Together, the cast brings the characters caught in the kidnapping crisis to the screen, with the story placing particular focus on Mark and Abigail as they attempt to respond to the situation.
The film’s central conflict gives the characters little time to consider their options as they work towards securing their son’s safe return.
Deception And High-Stakes Choices
While the kidnapping provides the central crisis, Animals also explores the consequences of the decisions made in response to it.
Mark and Abigail are confronted with circumstances that force them to move beyond what they might ordinarily consider acceptable. Their efforts to pay the ransom pull them deeper into a situation involving deception and danger.
As the story unfolds, their choices threaten to destroy the lives they have built.
The pressure created by the limited time available adds another layer of tension to the narrative. The couple must act quickly, but every decision carries consequences.
The film’s 106-minute runtime allows the story to maintain its focus on the unfolding crisis, the family at its centre and the dangerous circumstances surrounding the ransom.
Set For October Release
Animals is scheduled to premiere on October 9, 2026, with the crime thriller set to open in select theatres before also becoming available on Netflix.
The film marks another directorial project for Affleck, who also stars in and co-wrote the movie.
With its story built around a kidnapped child, a high-stakes ransom and a couple forced into a dangerous web of deception, Animals is positioned as a crime thriller driven by urgency and difficult choices.
Audiences will be able to watch Ben Affleck as Mark Kimball and Kerry Washington as Abigail as they attempt to navigate the crisis surrounding their son.
