The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has expressed grief over the death of veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, who passed away at the age of 57 after a brief illness.
The actor’s family confirmed his death in a statement published on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
The family expressed appreciation for the support and prayers received while asking for privacy and understanding during the difficult period.
AGN National President, Abubakar Yakubu, also paid tribute to the late actor on Instagram. Sharing a photograph of Duru, Yakubu described him as another great talent lost to the entertainment industry and prayed for his peaceful rest.
Duru’s passing has renewed conversations about his long-standing contribution to Nigerian cinema and the legacy he leaves behind after more than three decades in the industry.
He began his acting career in 1989 and rose to wider prominence through his portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s 1995 film, Rattlesnake.
The role helped establish his reputation as a recognisable face in Nollywood, where he continued to work across different productions.
Beyond his acting career, Duru also played a role in the administration of the Actors Guild of Nigeria. He served as the guild’s interim president in 2010, reflecting his involvement in the professional body representing Nigerian actors.
His death comes months after he publicly addressed rumours concerning his health. In June 2026, photographs showing him looking frail circulated online, leading to speculation that he was seriously ill.
Duru subsequently released a video on Instagram to reject claims that he was battling a severe health condition.
At the time, he maintained that the reports were misleading and expressed confidence about his wellbeing.
The actor’s passing is also a personal loss for his family, coming two years after the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.
Duru’s death marks another sad moment for Nollywood, with colleagues and admirers reflecting on his years of service to the film industry.
His performances, professional experience and involvement in the Actors Guild of Nigeria remain significant parts of his legacy.
As tributes continue to emerge, the entertainment community joins his family in mourning an actor whose career spanned more than 30 years.
