Netflix is set to premiere A Couple of Lies, a four-part Swedish psychological thriller series, on October 30, 2026, bringing a story of deception, surveillance and mistrust to the streaming platform.
The limited series is based on Bytet, the bestselling crime novel by Swedish author Stefan Ahnhem. It explores how a seemingly straightforward holiday arrangement between two wealthy couples develops into a dangerous situation that challenges their relationships and raises questions about the secrets people keep from those closest to them.
Directed by Kasper Barfoed, known for his work on The Nurse, the series features Frida Gustavsson, Fares Fares, Emma Appleton and Jakob Oftebro in leading roles. Amanda Högberg and Axel Stjärne wrote the adaptation, while Swedish production studio Asp Varhos is behind the project.
Two Couples, One Holiday Exchange
The story centres on two affluent couples whose decision to exchange homes for a holiday sets the stage for a series of unsettling events.
Helene and Carl Wester, who live in Stockholm, agree to swap homes with Scarlett and Adam Harris. The arrangement offers the couples an opportunity to experience different surroundings, with one pair heading to a sun-soaked villa in Sicily while the other stays in a home in the Stockholm archipelago.
Initially, the exchange appears to promise a relaxing escape from their usual routines. However, the situation gradually takes a darker turn as unexpected developments begin to disrupt their plans.
What begins as an appealing holiday arrangement soon becomes a tense experience involving surveillance, hidden secrets and growing suspicion. The couples are forced to reconsider what they know about one another as the events surrounding them become increasingly difficult to explain.
Police involvement adds another layer of tension, pushing the characters to confront questions about their relationships and the possibility that the people they trust may not be entirely honest with them.
Frida Gustavsson, Fares Fares Lead Cast
Frida Gustavsson plays Helene Wester, while Fares Fares portrays her husband, Carl Wester. Their characters form one half of the two couples at the centre of the story.
Emma Appleton stars as Scarlett Harris, with Jakob Oftebro playing Adam Harris. Their characters participate in the home exchange that triggers the unfolding chain of events.
The supporting cast includes Magnus Krepper, Diarmuid Noyes, Anna Bjelkerud and Lars Väringer.
The story places the four lead characters at the centre of a psychological conflict in which suspicion and uncertainty gradually undermine the sense of security associated with their relationships.
As the couples become entangled in the unfolding mystery, the holiday exchange becomes more than a change of scenery. It creates a situation in which personal boundaries, trust and private information become increasingly important to the story.
Adaptation Of Stefan Ahnhem’s Crime Novel
A Couple of Lies draws its story from Bytet, a bestselling crime novel by Stefan Ahnhem. The television adaptation brings the book’s central premise to a four-part limited series for Netflix.
The project is directed by Kasper Barfoed, whose previous work includes The Nurse. The screenplay was written by Amanda Högberg and Axel Stjärne.
Asp Varhos, the production studio behind the series, has also been associated with productions including Love & Anarchy and Deliver Me.
With its focus on secrets, surveillance and mistrust between couples, the series centres on the psychological consequences of an arrangement that initially appears harmless.
Netflix Release Date
The four-part Swedish limited series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2026.
Rather than presenting its story as a feature film, the production will unfold across four episodes, allowing the mystery surrounding the two couples and their holiday exchange to develop throughout the series.
As the characters face unexpected events and police involvement, their relationships become increasingly complicated, leaving trust at the heart of the unfolding psychological thriller.
