Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has questioned the state of democracy in Nigeria, arguing that the country is yet to fully practise the principles expected of a democratic society.
The singer made the remarks during a recent episode of the One54 Podcast while discussing his colleague Davido’s decision to appeal to United States President Donald Trump over the recently held Osun State governorship election.
Adekunle Gold said he believed Davido’s decision to draw Trump’s attention to the election was connected to concerns about the way democratic processes are being handled in Nigeria.
According to the ‘Orente’ crooner, the country still has significant ground to cover before it can be regarded as a society that fully upholds democratic values.
“I think Davido sent that message to Donald Trump because we are not truly practising democracy in Nigeria. We are not doing what a democratic society should do. I just hope this administration does better than the previous one,” he said.
The singer’s remarks have added to the ongoing conversation about Nigeria’s political system, particularly issues surrounding elections, governance and the confidence citizens have in democratic institutions.
