Gospel singer Shola Allison has revealed a shocking conversation she said she overheard after inviting popular actor and singer Lateef Adedimeji to one of her programmes.
According to Shola Allison, the incident happened after she arrived in America, when a pastor who knew her contacted someone and told the person that she was now in America and could be invited to minister at programmes.
However, the conversation reportedly took an unexpected turn because the pastor’s phone was on speaker, unbeknownst to the person on the other end.
Shola Allison said she heard the person respond:
«“We can't call her to come and minister in programs, someone that did a program and invited A MUSLIM BROTHER, which is LATEEF ADEDIMEJI to her program despite being a gospel singer.”»
The gospel singer said she was shocked by the statement, particularly because she had believed that her ministration with Lateef Adedimeji had positively impacted many people.
“I was amazed,” Shola Allison said.
She suggested that the attitude could have professional consequences, particularly if people decided not to invite her to programmes because of her decision to feature Lateef.
She also used the experience to reflect on the difficult journey she has experienced, revealing that there was a period about three years ago when she almost died.
According to her, life is a process, and people often do not know the battles others have gone through before reaching where they are.
Shola Allison further alleged that people within the industry sometimes gather behind closed doors to say negative things about one another.
She recalled the reaction to her stage performance with Lateef Adedimeji, saying that while many people publicly praised the performance because it touched them, she was allegedly being criticised privately over the same appearance.
“You all saw my stage ministration with Lateef and you love it because it impacted many of you, but you don't know how I was castigated behind closed doors for that video,” she said.
Despite what she described as her experience, Shola Allison said she would not deliberately destroy another person's reputation.
She explained that even if someone had wronged her, she would still speak positively about that person if asked.
“Even if you have wrong me before and they ask you from me, I will say you are a nice person,” she said.
She added that disagreements should be handled directly rather than through private conversations aimed at condemning another person.
“When you and I meet physical we can fight but not like condemning you behind,” she said.
Shola Allison also questioned why people within the same industry should constantly compete against or undermine one another.
“I’m not saying you should be close friends, but why are you beefing yourself? What for?”
She continued:
“What are we fighting ourselves for?”
According to the gospel singer, nobody can take another person's glory because everyone has their own journey and purpose.
“You Can’t take my glory because it can't be useful for you because it will cost you headache. So also can’t take your glory.”
Her comments have brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding her collaboration with Lateef Adedimeji and the differing reactions that followed the performance.
For Shola Allison, the bigger issue goes beyond one programme or one individual.
It is about how people within the industry treat one another behind closed doors and whether there is enough room for everyone to succeed without pulling one another down.
