Nollywood filmmaker and actress Toyin Abraham is set to make her way back to the big screen with a fresh cinema project titled BESTIE, which she has confirmed will hit Nigerian theatres nationwide on December 16, 2026.
The announcement came on Friday when Toyin took to her social media pages to unveil a teaser clip introducing the upcoming film.
While she generated considerable buzz around the release date, she kept details surrounding the storyline and the cast largely under wraps, leaving fans to speculate ahead of the eventual rollout.
Her caption simply confirmed the film's cinema debut date and credited herself with the concept and direction of the project.
This latest venture follows closely on the heels of the massive success recorded by her 2025 release, Oversabi Aunty, a film that went on to surpass the one billion naira mark at Nigerian cinemas by January 2026.
That project held particular significance for Toyin as it represented her first outing as a director, and its box office performance made it the first directorial debut in Nollywood history to reach the billion-naira milestone.
The film ultimately grossed a total of 1.017 billion naira, an achievement that was formally recognized when the National Film and Video Censors Board honoured her with a Box Office Champion Award in March 2026.
Before this cinema announcement, Toyin had already signalled her intentions for the rest of the year. In July, she revealed that Alábọ̀sí 2 would serve as her last YouTube film release for 2026, and the movie subsequently premiered on her channel on July 28.
At the time, she also gave fans a hint that another cinema-bound project was in the pipeline before the year drew to a close, a promise she has now fulfilled with the BESTIE announcement.
Toyin has developed something of a tradition around December releases in previous years, having brought films such as Ijakumo: The Born Again Stripper to cinemas in 2022, followed by Malaika in 2023 and Alakada: Bad and Boujee in 2024. BESTIE now continues that pattern of year-end cinema offerings from the actress-turned-director.
However, she won't have the December slot to herself. Fellow Nollywood heavyweight Funke Akindele is also preparing for a cinema release during the same period, with her film The Four: No One Fights Alone slated to open on December 11, just five days ahead of Toyin's BESTIE.
As Toyin looks to replicate or even surpass the box office success of Oversabi Aunty, the comparison between her and Akindele remains inevitable within Nollywood circles, given that Akindele continues to hold the edge in terms of overall box office earnings among Nigerian filmmakers.
December 2026 is shaping up to be a competitive month at the Nigerian cinemas, with both actresses vying for audience attention.
