Veteran actresses Tina Mba and Kate Henshaw are set to headline The Letter, an upcoming stage production written and produced by Faith Akinola.
The play, which is being presented by Mustard Tree Productions, explores themes surrounding identity, rejection, emotional recovery and the pressure people often face from society.
At the centre of the story is a young bride whose expectations for one of the most important moments of her life are suddenly thrown into uncertainty.
Rather than focusing only on the disappointment surrounding the unexpected turn of events, The Letter examines how such experiences can affect a person’s sense of identity and outlook on life. The production also looks at the influence of family expectations, cultural values, unsolicited opinions and public scrutiny.
Akinola explained that the play was inspired by the question of how people cope when reality takes a completely different direction from the future they had imagined.
According to the producer, The Letter encourages audiences to consider whether a painful experience should be allowed to define a person or whether there is a way to rebuild hope and regain a sense of wholeness after disappointment.
The production will combine conventional drama with music and symbolic stage elements. Through these elements, the story is expected to take the audience through the protagonist’s emotional experience as she confronts the circumstances surrounding her situation and begins the process of finding restoration.
Mba and Henshaw will be joined on stage by Oluchi Odi, Mich Straw and other members of the cast. Their involvement adds an experienced ensemble to a production that centres on personal struggles and issues that can resonate with audiences beyond the stage.
