Nollywood recorded a notable presence at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, with three Nigerian productions earning spots across different sections of the prestigious event.
The festival, which ended on September 20, featured The Spectacular Death of Prisca, Clarissa, and The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives.
While each film represented a different side of Nigerian filmmaking, The Spectacular Death of Prisca emerged as the standout title after receiving an Honourable Mention in the Short Cuts category.
Directed by Nigerian-American filmmaker Kaelo Iyizoba, the short film stars Rita Dominic, Genoveva Umeh, Fae Olumide and Shamz Garuba. The production combines elements of comedy, drama and action while paying tribute to the distinctive style associated with classic Nollywood films.
The recognition marked an important moment for Nigerian cinema, as the film became the first Nigerian production to receive recognition from a TIFF jury, according to reports cited by NollyCritic. The award also made it the only African title among the festival's award recipients and runners-up.
Meanwhile, Clarissa brought a different cinematic approach to Toronto. Directed by brothers Arie and Chuko Esiri, the film is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway and relocates the story to Lagos.
The production features an international cast including Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, Ayo Edebiri, India Amarteifio, Toheeb Jimoh, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Joke Silva. After premiering at Cannes earlier in the year, the film continued its festival journey at TIFF.
The third Nigerian title, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, received its world premiere in Toronto.
Directed by Daniel Oriahi and adapted from Lola Shoneyin’s acclaimed novel, the film centres on a young university graduate who becomes the fourth wife of a wealthy polygamist.
Starring Odunlade Adekola, Omowunmi Dada, Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe and Bimbo Ademoye, the production was presented predominantly in Yoruba, reflecting the cultural setting of the story.
Nollywood’s participation extended beyond film screenings to the business side of the festival. FilmOne Entertainment took part in TIFF: The Market, while Blue Pictures Entertainment CEO Joy Odiete participated in the Buyers in Focus programme. Nile Media Entertainment Group CEO Moses Babatope also served on the market’s global advisory committee.
The Nigerian delegation was part of a broader African presence at TIFF, with Ghanaian film Zjili: A Story of Sisterhood and The Burdens of Excess also selected for the festival.
With three Nigerian films represented and one receiving jury recognition, TIFF 2026 provided another international platform for filmmakers and stories from Nigeria.
