“They Used Me As A Sacrificial Lamb” — Kofi Ajorlolo Recalls Ghana Ban

Veteran Ghanaian actor Kofi Ajorlolo has spoken about a difficult period in his career when a group of producers in Ghana stopped him from working in the country.

Ajorlolo said the decision was supposed to keep him away from acting for two years. However, the situation turned out differently because he continued to receive opportunities from producers outside Ghana, particularly from Nigeria.

Looking back at what happened, the actor said he became the person used to make a point during what he described as the first time such a ban had been imposed.

“I was banned from acting in Ghana for 2 years by a group of producers,” he said.

The ban, however, did not leave him without work. According to Ajorlolo, Nigerian producers were interested in having him on their productions at the same time he was being prevented from working in Ghana.

He said the attention he was receiving from Nigeria eventually made the ban less effective than those behind it may have expected.

“Finally, I think they themselves went back and they realized that no, it was not worth it because as they were banning me in Ghana here, Nigerian producers too were calling, fighting for me to come perform. So it didn't affect me.”

Ajorlolo's account suggests that the decision had a limited impact on his career because his work had already extended beyond Ghana's film industry. Instead of remaining out of work for the entire period, he continued to have opportunities elsewhere.

The actor also clarified that the two-year ban never actually lasted that long. After several months, the producers changed their position and asked him to return.

He said

“After six months or eight months or so, they themselves just pulled that thing out that I should come back. So they used me as a sacrificial lamb. That was the first time.”

For Ajorlolo, the episode became one of the unusual moments in his long acting career, particularly because the decision to stop him from working in Ghana did not prevent him from finding opportunities in another part of the West African film industry.

His experience also reflects how closely connected the Ghanaian and Nigerian film industries have become over the years, with actors regularly moving between productions in both countries.

While the ban was initially meant to last two years, Ajorlolo said it was abandoned within roughly six to eight months. He eventually returned to acting in Ghana after the producers reversed the decision.

The actor's account is a reminder that his career has not been limited to one film industry. His work across Ghana and Nigeria has allowed him to remain active even during periods when opportunities in one country became difficult to access.
