“There’s Nothing Special In Your Acting” – Iyapupa Slams Veteran Actor Pete Edochie

Content creator Iyapupa has challenged veteran actor Pete Edochie over his recent claim that he is bigger than every other actor in Nollywood.

The statement has drawn attention to the long-running debate about status, influence and experience in the Nigerian movie industry. While Edochie is widely recognised as one of Nollywood’s veteran figures, Iyapupa believes his years in the industry should not automatically make him superior to every other actor.

Speaking about the actor’s claim, Iyapupa made it clear that she respects his position as an elder but does not agree with the idea that his acting places him above everyone else.

“There’s nothing special in your acting. Nothing, nothing is special for wetin you dey act,” she said.

Iyapupa went further to question what she sees as the level of difficulty in some of the roles associated with Edochie. She pointed out that the veteran actor has featured in several scenes where his character is mostly seated, holding a fan or reacting dramatically to situations.

For her, those performances are not enough to justify a claim of being bigger than all other actors, especially when there are performers taking on physically demanding roles in action productions.

Her argument was not simply about comparing one actor with another. Iyapupa also brought up the history of theatre and acting in Nigeria, reminding Edochie that the profession existed long before his own time in the spotlight.

“We get people wey don start acting before you,” she said.

The comment touches on a familiar issue in Nollywood, where veteran actors are often respected for the foundation they helped build, while newer generations continue to bring different styles and approaches to the industry.

Iyapupa maintained that success in Nollywood should not necessarily be measured by who is the biggest of them all. In her view, actors can have different levels of achievement and still be recognised for what they bring to the profession.

She also stressed that every individual has a place in the industry and should be allowed to enjoy their own achievements without turning it into a competition over who stands above everyone else.

“Everybody get their own glory but you can't come and tell us say you are bigger than all the actors,”She stated. 

Her comments put the focus back on the question of how Nollywood should measure greatness. For some, longevity and influence may be the biggest indicators, while others may look at range, physical performance, versatility, awards or the ability to connect with audiences.

For Iyapupa, however, being a respected veteran does not mean an actor should be considered automatically bigger than everyone else.
