Nollywood actress Omowunmi Dada has called on Nigerians to extend more grace and support toward the local film industry rather than constantly measuring it against Hollywood's decades-long legacy.
The actress made her remarks on Thursday while responding to a post by X user Miriam Ogbonna, who had lamented the tendency of Nigerians to criticize homegrown films regardless of their quality.
Ogbonna's post expressed frustration at what she described as Nigerians being their own worst critics, noting that no matter how well-received a Nollywood production might be, there will always be voices tearing it down.
Reacting to the observation, Dada agreed wholeheartedly, noting that criticizing Nollywood has almost become a trendy pastime among certain segments of the audience.
She expressed her wish that viewers would approach the industry with more understanding, pointing out the unfairness of holding Nollywood to the same standard as Hollywood, an industry that has had over a century to build its infrastructure, refine its systems, and develop a far more robust economic foundation.
Her comments arrive at a time when discussions around the quality, structure, and overall trajectory of Nigerian filmmaking continue to dominate entertainment conversations, with industry stakeholders regularly debating what needs to change for Nollywood to reach greater heights.
Dada, who has built a solid reputation within the industry, has featured in a string of notable productions over the years, including Omugwo, Ayinla, Oloture, Anikulapo, and Fumilayo Ransome Kuti, films that have helped shape her standing as one of the more respected faces in contemporary Nollywood.
She is currently also part of the cast of A Mama Deola Wedding Story, a film that premiered on the streaming platform Kava on September 3, 2026.
In the project, directed by Femi Adebayo, Dada plays one of the lead characters alongside actor Rotimi Salami, further adding to her growing list of prominent roles this year.
Beyond her acting credits, the actress has also earned industry recognition for her craft, having previously won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2022 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards for her role in the film Country Hard, a testament to her consistent contribution to Nigerian cinema over the years.
As conversations around Nollywood's global positioning continue to evolve, Dada's remarks add to an ongoing dialogue among actors and industry figures who believe that constant comparisons to more established film industries abroad often overshadow the unique challenges and progress being made within Nigeria's own cinematic landscape.
