Regha Asks Why Margaret Obi’s Luxury Bag Is Being Defended

Daniel Regha has questioned the defence of Margaret Obi after the wife of former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was seen with a Birkin bag said to be worth millions of naira.

The issue, for Regha, goes beyond whether Margaret Obi can afford the luxury item herself. He believes the reaction would have been very different if the person involved were connected to politicians or political figures who do not enjoy the same level of support from Peter Obi’s supporters.

Regha also drew attention to Peter Obi’s long-standing message around reducing dependence on imported goods and moving Nigeria from consumption to production. He argued that seeing his wife with an expensive foreign luxury item creates a situation that deserves to be questioned, particularly given the emphasis placed on buying and producing locally.

In making his argument, Regha also brought up Peter Obi’s personal comments about material possessions, including his claim that he owns only one watch and does not place much importance on unnecessary luxury.

"Peter Obi's wife (Margaret) is seen rocking a berkin bag that worth millions, and all of a sudden people are defending her with the excuse that she has her own money and can buy whatever she wants. Really? Y'all couldn't even hide your hypocrisy. So it's other politicians and their children that don't have their own money?.

The husband is busy campaigning on "From the consumption to production" made-in-Nigeria agenda, and the wife is seen parading with foriegn luxury items. If this were to be Remi Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu's wife, Atiku's family members, or anyone not aligning with Peter Obi the outrage will be loud from those now making excuses.

So Peter Obi himself that claims to have only one watch and doesn't like unnecessary material wealth is watching his own wife spend lavishly on material things. Quite interesting."

At the heart of Regha’s argument is the question of consistency. His position appears to be that political figures and their families should not be judged differently depending on which side of the political divide they belong to.

The discussion also touches on a familiar question in Nigerian politics: whether the personal spending choices of politicians and their spouses should be viewed separately from the public messages those politicians promote.

For supporters of Peter Obi, Margaret Obi having the financial freedom to purchase luxury items may be enough explanation. But Regha’s argument is that the same standard should be applied across the political space, regardless of who is involved.

His criticism therefore focuses less on the Birkin bag itself and more on what he sees as a difference in the way similar situations are treated when they involve different political camps.

The comments have once again placed the focus on the relationship between personal wealth, political messaging and expectations of public figures, especially when politicians build their campaigns around ideas such as local production, modesty and responsible spending.
