Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has sparked reactions after declaring that he does not consider himself to be on the same level as other actors in the Nigerian film industry.
The respected actor made the statement while appearing on comedian Isbae U’s online programme, Curiosity Made Me Ask, where he was asked several questions about his career, colleagues and status in Nollywood.
During the conversation, Edochie was asked to identify his favourite actor in the industry. Rather than naming a colleague, the veteran actor explained that he did not have one because, in his view, he occupied a higher position than other actors.
“I don’t have a favourite actor because I am bigger than all of them,” Edochie said.
The comment reflects the veteran actor’s confidence in his position and the recognition he has earned throughout his long career in the Nigerian film industry.
Edochie Addresses Seniority Claims
The conversation also touched on claims made by some actors who have suggested that they are more senior to Edochie in the acting profession.
The veteran actor said he had seen people publicly make such claims but had deliberately chosen not to respond to them.
“People have been writing that they are older than me in the industry, but I don’t respond,” he said.
Edochie explained that he does not feel the need to engage every person who makes a statement about his position or career.
However, when he was asked about actors who believe they are on the same level as him, the veteran issued a direct challenge to anyone who holds such an opinion.
“Whoever said they are of the same level with me should come out and say it,” he said.
His remarks have drawn attention because questions surrounding seniority, longevity and influence have remained part of discussions about the Nigerian film industry.
Yemi Solade’s Earlier Claim Resurfaces
Edochie’s comments also come amid earlier remarks by fellow actor Yemi Solade concerning who began acting first.
Solade has previously acknowledged that Edochie is older than him while maintaining that he entered the acting profession before the veteran actor.
The issue resurfaced during Solade’s own appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask, where he again maintained that he started acting before Edochie.
While responding to questions about actors who claim to have greater seniority or consider themselves Edochie’s equals, the veteran actor did not directly mention Solade by name.
Instead, he maintained his position and challenged anyone who believed they were on the same level with him to publicly make the claim.
The exchange has consequently added another layer to the long-running conversation about experience and seniority among established Nollywood actors.
Edochie Reflects On His Status As A Legend
During the interview, Edochie was also asked about being described as a legend in Nollywood.
The actor admitted that he was not certain about the precise definition of the term “legend”, but said he appreciated the recognition and affection he continues to receive from audiences.
“I don’t know the definition of people’s legend, but I’m glad to be celebrated,” he said.
His response reflects his acknowledgement of the public recognition that has accompanied his decades-long career.
Edochie remains one of the most recognisable names associated with Nigerian cinema, having built a reputation through numerous memorable performances and a career that spans several decades.
