Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, widely known by her screen name Mama G, has cautioned parents against excessive pampering, warning that the practice could rob children of the resilience needed to become responsible and self-sufficient adults.

In a candid conversation touching on parenting, wealth, and family inheritance, the actress explained that many parents unknowingly harm their children by shielding them from every form of difficulty, often out of a desire to give them a better life than they themselves experienced growing up.

According to Ozokwor, the well-meaning instinct to spare children from hardship can backfire badly if taken too far.

She stressed that parents who insist on providing everything for their children, without allowing them to face any form of struggle, may end up stunting their growth into capable individuals.

"When you say, 'I don't want my children to suffer what I suffered when I was growing up', you see, that's the best way to destroy your children," she said, framing over-protection as a subtle but destructive parenting error.

The actress was quick to clarify her position, noting that she wasn't advocating for parents to intentionally inflict suffering on their offspring. Rather, her message centered on the importance of allowing children to encounter and work through life's natural challenges.

She explained that struggle plays a vital role in personal development, giving young people the chance to understand what it truly takes to build something of their own. Removing that process entirely, she suggested, leaves children unprepared for the realities of adult life.

"I'm not saying allow them to suffer, what I'm saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process," she added, drawing a clear distinction between deliberate hardship and healthy exposure to life's demands.

Ozokwor didn't stop at parenting philosophy alone. She also addressed the sensitive subject of inheritance, advising parents against raising children who expect automatic entitlement to family assets and wealth accumulated over a lifetime of work.

She encouraged parents to hold onto what they've built while making it clear to their children that they, too, must work to create their own paths and possessions, rather than relying on handouts.

To illustrate her point, the actress shared a personal example involving her own son. She revealed that she had firmly told him not to view her house as an inheritance he could simply fall back on, but rather as motivation to build something of his own.

"I told my son, my house isn't yours, go and work for your own," she disclosed, underscoring her belief that even those closest to her must learn independence rather than dependency.
