Osita Iheme ‘Pawpaw’ Joins Global List of Viral Internet Legends

Nollywood star Osita Iheme, better known as Pawpaw, has received an unexpected nod from global internet culture after appearing on a list celebrating individuals who became famous through viral moments.

Iheme was featured alongside well-known internet figures including Success Kid, Bad Luck Brian and Side-Eyeing Chloe. However, his inclusion comes with an interesting twist that sets him apart from the other names on the list.

While many of the personalities became internet sensations because of photographs or videos recorded when they were children, Iheme was already an adult when the character that would eventually make him a global meme icon became popular.

The actor was 25 when he shot to prominence through the 2002 Nollywood movie Aki na Ukwa, where he starred alongside Chinedu Ikedieze. Iheme played Pawpaw, while Ikedieze portrayed Aki.

The two actors quickly became famous for their ability to convincingly portray mischievous children despite being adults. 

Their physical appearance, comic timing and memorable performances made them a favourite among Nollywood audiences and established them as one of the most recognisable comedy duos in Nigerian cinema.

But Pawpaw's popularity would eventually take a completely different direction. Long after the release of their early movies, clips and still images from Iheme's performances began circulating heavily across social media platforms. Internet users started turning his facial expressions and memorable scenes into reaction memes, giving the actor a new audience far beyond the traditional Nollywood fan base.

His expressions became useful for communicating emotions that could otherwise require lengthy explanations. Whether someone wanted to express confusion, disappointment, disbelief, frustration or excitement, a Pawpaw reaction image often said it all.

The trend eventually spread internationally, making Iheme's face familiar to people who might not even know the movies from which the images were taken.

His journey is notably different from that of other personalities on the viral list. Sam Griner, for instance, became famous as Success Kid after a photograph taken when he was a toddler gained massive attention online. 

Kyle Craven's school yearbook picture turned him into Bad Luck Brian, while Chloe Clem became widely recognised as Side-Eyeing Chloe after footage of her reaction to a surprise Disneyland trip went viral.

In Pawpaw's case, the internet rediscovered an established acting performance rather than an ordinary childhood moment.

The resurgence of his old movie scenes also demonstrates the lasting influence of Nollywood on digital culture. What began as comedy in Nigerian films eventually became material for internet users around the world, with Pawpaw's expressions taking on meanings beyond their original movie contexts.

The actor's meme popularity has continued for years, keeping his character relevant to younger social media users who may have encountered his images online before ever watching Aki na Ukwa.

More than 20 years after his breakthrough, Iheme remains one of Nollywood's most recognisable personalities. His latest appearance on a global viral list further highlights the unusual journey of Pawpaw—from a character in Nigerian comedy films to a familiar face in worldwide internet culture.

There may be a technical mistake in calling him a viral kid, but the bigger point remains: Pawpaw became an internet legend by playing one.
