Nollywood actress Omowunmi Dada has opened up about a past relationship that ended after differences over religion made her realise that they wanted different things for their future family.
The actress shared the experience during an interview with VJ Adams, where she explained that her former partner initially presented himself as a Christian when they met but later began observing Islamic practices.
Dada recalled being surprised when Ramadan began and her partner told her that he was fasting. When she asked him why he had decided to observe the fast, he explained that embracing Islam would make his mother happy.
According to the actress, that conversation immediately made her reconsider the future of their relationship.
She said the issue was not about hostility towards Islam or Muslims but about the kind of family she personally wanted to build.
‘I Knew I Couldn’t Be With Him’
Dada explained that she had always wanted to marry a practising Christian and raise her children according to the Christian faith.
She said her former partner’s decision to embrace Islam because of his mother’s wishes made her realise that their expectations for marriage and family life were different.
She said, “I dated someone who, when I met him, was a Christian, and then sometime later Ramadan started, and he said he was fasting. I said, ‘Why?’ and he said, ‘Because that is what will make his mom happy.’ He said being a Muslim is what will make his mom happy. Right then, I knew I couldn’t be with him.”
For Dada, the difference was significant because she wanted a marriage where both partners shared the same faith and could raise their children according to their shared beliefs.
Actress Clarifies Her Position On Islam
The actress was also careful to clarify that her decision to end the relationship was not based on any dislike or hostility towards Muslims.
Dada noted that she has Muslim friends whom she respects and considers amazing people.
“I have nothing against Muslims; I have Muslim friends who are amazing people, by the way,” she said.
Her explanation focused on her personal beliefs and the type of home she hopes to establish rather than making a judgement about another religion.
Dada said her priority was to have a husband with whom she could share the same faith and religious direction.
Her Former Partner Wanted Another Arrangement
The actress further revealed that her former partner did not immediately accept the end of the relationship.
According to Dada, he asked her to reconsider her decision and even offered to attend church with her.
However, there were still differences regarding how they would raise their children.
While he was willing to attend church with her, he also wanted their future children to visit the mosque and learn about Islam.
For Dada, that arrangement did not fit the kind of family structure she wanted.
She explained that she wanted her children to be raised within the Christian faith without having to navigate different religious expectations between their parents.
‘I Want To Raise My Children The Christian Way’
Dada stressed that her decision was connected to her personal vision of marriage and family.
She said she wanted to share one faith with her husband and build a home where they could practise that faith together.
“But for the kind of family that I want to raise, I would love to raise my children the Christian way. I want to be able to hold hands with my husband in one faith, in unity as a family,” she said.
Her comments highlight how personal religious beliefs can influence decisions about relationships, particularly when couples have different expectations about marriage and raising children.
For Dada, discovering that her former partner had changed his religious direction was enough to make her reconsider the relationship.
Although the two attempted to find a possible compromise, their differing expectations about the religious upbringing of their future children remained a major concern for the actress.
Dada’s revelation offers an insight into the personal considerations she has when it comes to choosing a life partner.
Rather than continue a relationship where she felt their fundamental expectations were different, she chose to walk away.
