Luxury car content creator, auto reviewer and entrepreneur Ola of Lagos has recalled one of the moments from his early days in the automobile business when he was still trying to establish himself.
Long before his name became closely associated with expensive cars and luxury automobiles, Ola said he was simply looking for opportunities to get his work in front of more people. At that stage, he was prepared to offer his services without asking for payment, believing that getting the chance to work with a car dealership could help him build useful connections and prove what he could do.
One of the dealerships he approached, however, did not immediately see the value in the proposal.
Ola said he went to the dealership and offered to advertise its cars for free. Rather than accepting the offer, the people there questioned his level of recognition and asked him a simple but pointed question: “Who knows you?”
At that point, Ola did not have the level of recognition he has today. He was still building his reputation and trying to convince people that his work could attract attention to the vehicles he featured.
The rejection did not stop him from pursuing his plans. He continued creating content around cars and working to establish himself in an industry where reputation and visibility can make a significant difference.
According to Ola, the situation eventually took an unexpected turn.
Months after turning down his offer, the same dealership came back to him. By then, his profile had changed considerably, and he had gained more recognition within the car space.
The dealership that had previously questioned who knew him was now interested in doing business with him.
What makes the story particularly striking is how different the two situations were. The first time, Ola was the one trying to convince the dealership to give him an opportunity, even offering to promote its cars without charging. Later, the dealership returned when he had become more established.
Ola said the relationship did not end with a simple advertising arrangement. According to him, the dealership eventually paid him millions.
Reflecting on the experience, he said, “I Once Begged a Car Dealership to Let Me Advertise Their Cars for Free, but They Asked, ‘Who Knows You?’ Months Later, They Came Back After I Became Popular and Eventually Paid Me Millions.”
The experience captures an important part of his journey in the automobile space. Before the luxury cars, business opportunities and recognition came the period when he had to introduce himself, seek opportunities and convince people to take his work seriously.
For Ola, what started as an unsuccessful attempt to secure a free advertising opportunity later became a business relationship that brought in millions. The dealership's initial question “Who knows you?” eventually had a very different answer.
