Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has explained that online criticism and political bullying influenced her decision to openly support Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, she said she became frustrated by the way Nigerians attacked people simply because of their political preferences.
She recalled the backlash suffered by veteran actress Joke Silva after she publicly expressed her support for Tinubu.
According to her, witnessing the criticism directed at Silva played a role in her decision to make her own political position known.
She subsequently recorded a video declaring her support for Tinubu, challenging those who had tried to pressure her or others into changing their political choices.
The actress said political disagreements should not turn into personal attacks, urging Nigerians to respect people who hold different opinions.
She stressed that individuals have the right to decide which political candidate they want to support and should not face harassment because of their choices.
She maintained that Nigerians can disagree over political candidates without resorting to abuse or intimidation.
Her comments come amid discussions about the involvement of celebrities in Nigerian politics and the reactions entertainers sometimes face when they publicly endorse political candidates.
She has also previously spoken positively about Tinubu and his relationship with Nigeria's entertainment industry, citing what she considers his contributions to the creative sector.
However, in her latest comments, she placed particular emphasis on the treatment of people with opposing political views.
She argued that differences of opinion are a normal part of society and should be respected.
She continues to stand by the political choice she made during the 2023 election while acknowledging that other Nigerians have the right to disagree with her.
Her remarks have renewed attention on celebrity endorsements, social media reactions and political expression within Nigeria's entertainment industry.
