Netflix is set to premiere a new thriller limited series, Below, taking viewers into the cold and mysterious waters of Newfoundland, Canada.
The six-episode series is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on October 8, 2026, combining mystery, family drama and creature horror in a story centred on a remote fishing community.
Below follows Calvin Penney, a stubborn but big-hearted local fisherman played by Josh Hartnett. Calvin has spent years haunted by the mysterious death of his father, an event that continues to shape his life and relationship with his family.
However, his troubled past takes a more frightening turn when an unidentified and terrifying sea creature begins lurking beneath the icy coastal waters surrounding the community.
As the creature starts terrorising the town, Calvin is forced to confront both the danger beneath the sea and the secrets connected to his family’s past.
A Mysterious Threat Beneath The Water
Set in a small fishing community in Newfoundland, Below places its characters in an isolated environment where the surrounding waters become a source of fear.
The appearance of the mysterious creature creates a growing threat for residents, forcing Calvin to take action to protect the people closest to him.
The danger also gives Calvin an opportunity to investigate questions surrounding his father’s death.
What initially appears to be a terrifying creature story gradually becomes connected to buried secrets from the island’s past.

Calvin Teams Up With Marine Researcher
As the situation becomes increasingly dangerous, Calvin teams up with Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis.
Fonda brings scientific knowledge to the investigation as the pair attempt to understand the mysterious creature beneath the water.
Their partnership places local experience alongside scientific research, with both characters working together to confront a threat they do not fully understand.
For Calvin, the investigation is also deeply personal because of the connection between the creature and the mystery surrounding his father.
Together, Calvin and Fonda must find a way to protect his family, confront the monster and uncover secrets that have remained hidden for decades.
Josh Hartnett Leads Cast
Hartnett takes on the central role of Calvin Penney, the fisherman at the heart of the series.
Mackenzie Davis stars opposite him as Fonda Howander, while Charlie Heaton plays Wade Penney, Calvin’s son.
Natasha Henstridge also features in the series as Jan, with Ruby Stokes playing Mary Penney.
The cast brings together a mix of established performers and younger actors for the six-episode thriller.
Below is created by Jesse McKeown, while Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn serve as directors.
