Akinola Davies Jr.’s critically acclaimed feature film, My Father’s Shadow, is set to reach a much wider audience as it makes its way to Netflix this September.

The film marks the British-Nigerian filmmaker’s feature directorial debut and explores family, memory and political uncertainty through the experiences of two brothers.

Written by Davies Jr. alongside Wale Davies, the story is rooted in a significant period in Nigeria’s history, using a deeply personal family journey to reflect the atmosphere of the country at the time.

Set in June 1993, the movie takes place over a single day that begins with an unexpected family reunion.

Two young brothers, Akin and Remi, encounter their father after he has been absent from their lives for some time. Played by Godwin Chiemerie Egbo and Chibuike Egbo respectively, the boys initially see their father through an idealised lens.

Their perception, however, begins to change as they spend more time with him. What starts as a journey involving a father and his sons gradually becomes an emotional exploration of the complicated relationship between memory, family and identity.

The personal story unfolds against the backdrop of a major political crisis. As events surrounding Nigeria’s 1993 presidential election take a dramatic turn, the family finds itself caught in an increasingly unstable environment.

The political turmoil surrounding them adds another layer of tension to the brothers’ journey and transforms what might have been an ordinary day into an unforgettable experience.

Filmed largely in Lagos, My Father’s Shadow was shot on 16mm film, with Jermaine Edwards serving as cinematographer. The production has received considerable attention internationally, particularly following its appearance at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Nigerian production selected for the official competition at Cannes. It premiered in the Un Certain Regard section and subsequently received a Special Mention for the Camera d’Or, further strengthening its reputation on the international festival circuit.

Its success continued beyond Cannes, with the production earning recognition at major awards ceremonies, including the British Independent Film Awards and BAFTA. Sope Dirisu, who takes on the role of the brothers’ father, also received recognition for his performance, winning the Gotham Independent Film Award for Outstanding Lead Performance.

Following its successful journey through cinemas and international festivals, the film is now preparing for its streaming debut. My Father’s Shadow is scheduled to become available on Netflix on September 21, giving audiences around the world an opportunity to experience Davies Jr.’s acclaimed debut.

With its combination of intimate family drama and a defining moment in Nigerian history, the film arrives on the streaming platform carrying both critical recognition and significant cultural importance.
