A woman has cried out over what she described as a painful experience involving a man she met and dated online for eight months.
She said the relationship started on Instagram after the man sent her a direct message. What began as casual conversations soon turned into something more serious, with the two of them communicating almost constantly despite living in different countries.
According to her, the man was living in Germany while she was in Nigeria. At the time they met, she was coming out of another relationship and was dealing with loneliness. She said the attention and connection she got from him made her feel comfortable enough to open up and trust him.
As the relationship progressed, she said she became emotionally attached and eventually became intimate with him. She believed they were in a genuine relationship and had no reason to suspect that the information he had given her about himself might not be true.
The situation reportedly changed after she attended a friend’s party. She said the man called her on a video call and questioned why she could afford to attend a party when she had not paid him the money he was demanding.
“Yesterday, I went out to my friend’s party, so I won’t die of depression. A friend of mine had a party, and I went. He called me on video call and said, ‘So you don’t have money to pay me, but you’re partying?’.
She said she had already given him a large amount of money that she had spent years working and saving for.
“The money I was supposed to use to buy a car, I paid him ₦7 million, only for him to start asking for another ₦12 million since Thursday.
“I have been hustling since when I was in 200 level, selling hair. I have been gathering this money to buy my car. I gathered about ₦19 million.”
She said the ₦19 million represented money she had carefully put together over time, with the hope of eventually buying a car. However, she ended up giving ₦7 million to the man during their relationship.
As doubts about him grew, she said she took another step to find out whether the details he had shared with her were genuine. She claimed that she paid someone to help track his location and was shocked by what she discovered.
“Inside it, I paid this guy ₦7 million. I had to also pay a hacker to hack his location, and I found out that every detail he gave me was fake", he said.
The situation became even more distressing when she alleged that the man began demanding another ₦12 million from her. She also claimed that he threatened to release their private moments online if she refused to pay.
“He has threatened to share them online if I don’t pay him the ₦12 million. I never knew this thing could happen to me. I was just in love.”
For her, the experience has been particularly painful because she said she entered the relationship believing she had found someone she could trust. What started with conversations on Instagram and gradually developed into an eight-month relationship has now left her dealing with a significant financial loss and alleged threats involving her private life.
She said she never imagined that someone she had become emotionally close to could put her in such a difficult position, adding that she had simply been in love when she made the decisions that led to the situation.
