Popular Nigerian skit maker and actor Akinyoola Ayoola, better known by his stage name Kamo State, has hit back at critics questioning his decision to release his debut movie, Star Lomo, in cinemas rather than through other distribution channels.
The controversy began after an X user identified as Yhettyqueen took to the platform to express skepticism about the cinema release, wondering aloud why she would need to dress up, book a ride, and spend her own money just to watch the film.
Her comment quickly gained traction, with many social media users weighing in on whether Kamo's choice to go the cinema route made sense for a project from a content creator known primarily for skits.
Kamo State didn't stay silent for long. In his response, he pushed back against what he described as premature judgment, arguing that people should reserve their opinions until they've actually seen the film.
He pointed out that forming conclusions about a project before even watching its teaser was unfair, insisting that every creative vision, including his, deserves a fair chance to be seen before it gets written off.
He added that constructive criticism was welcome, but only after audiences had genuinely engaged with the work.
Reactions to the back-and-forth have been mixed. While some social media users continued to question the logic behind a cinema release for a skit-maker's first movie, others rallied in his defense, arguing that taking work to the big screen was a bold and legitimate move for any Nigerian creative looking to expand beyond online content.
Star Lomo marks a major milestone for Kamo, as it represents his first venture into cinema. He didn't just star in the project, he also served as producer, with directing duties handled by Kayode Kasum, a name well respected in Nollywood circles.
The film boasts a notable cast list that includes Mike Afolarin, KieKie, Lateef Adedimeji, and Folake Babatunde. Also joining the cast is former Big Brother Naija housemate Koyin Sanusi, who will be making her big-screen acting debut through the project.
The film's trailer dropped on Monday, generating buzz ahead of its cinema debut. According to details shared, Star Lomo is set to hit cinemas across the country on September 25, giving fans just a few weeks to anticipate the release.
As the conversation around the film's distribution strategy continues online, Kamo State appears unbothered by the criticism, choosing instead to focus on the upcoming release and encouraging people to withhold judgment until they've had the chance to actually watch the film for themselves.
