Veteran Nollywood actress Yetunde Wunmi has reflected on some of the most difficult experiences of her life, including the loss of her only child and the legal ordeal that followed her arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Speaking during a recent interview, the Yoruba actress recalled the emotional turmoil surrounding her arrest and said she repeatedly questioned how she had found herself in such a situation.
She explained that the experience was difficult to process at the time, particularly because she had previously seen images of her arrest in dreams but did not attach much significance to them.
According to Wunmi, one of the deepest sources of pain in her life remains the death of her only child. She revealed that her son died when he was just one year and 10 days old.
The actress said she had already separated from her marriage before his death and recalled the circumstances surrounding the relationship between the child's father, herself and her acting career.
Wunmi's arrest dates back to September 23, 2006, when NDLEA officials apprehended her at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while she was preparing to travel to London.
She was accused of drug trafficking and was subsequently prosecuted at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The actress was eventually sentenced to three years in prison or a fine of N1 million after pleading guilty. She served two years and regained her freedom in 2008.
Looking back on the period, Wunmi described the incident as one of her biggest regrets and said it taught her difficult lessons about life, including the temporary nature of fame, relationships and material possessions.
She also recalled how the arrest affected her career and personal relationships. According to her, she lost her privacy, popularity and some of the people who had previously been close to her.
She said some colleagues distanced themselves from her because of her status as a former inmate, while others continued to show her support.
The actress credited the Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners (ANTP) with helping her rebuild her confidence and return to the entertainment industry. She said the organisation helped restore her hope and supported her efforts to restart her career.
Wunmi also attributed her comeback to her decision not to allow her past experiences to determine her future. She said humility and her willingness to move forward played important roles in rebuilding her life.
Now regarded as one of the established veterans of the Yoruba film industry, Wunmi has spent more than three decades in Nollywood. Her journey has included major personal setbacks, professional challenges and a return to the industry she loves.
Her latest reflection offers a glimpse into the experiences behind her long career and highlights how she navigated some of the most painful periods of her life while working to rebuild her reputation and continue her acting journey.
