Giving Beggars Money Is Preventing Them From Demanding Change — Seun Kuti

Seun Kuti has questioned the effect of giving poor people occasional financial assistance, arguing that such support can reduce the pressure they might otherwise put on society and those in power.

Speaking on ObjecTV, Kuti focused on the relationship between poverty, anger and the desire for change. His argument was that people who are struggling with severe hardship have a natural reason to become dissatisfied with the conditions around them. However, when they receive small amounts of money from time to time, that frustration may not reach the point where they feel compelled to demand something different.

For Kuti, the issue is not simply about whether helping someone in need is good or bad. He was looking at what happens when temporary assistance becomes a way of managing poverty without addressing the larger problems that created it in the first place.

He suggested that when people are able to get just enough support to survive, they may become more focused on meeting their immediate needs than confronting the bigger issues affecting their lives.

“The beggars are the ones who are supposed to be angry in order to cause revolution, but since we give them money from time to time, they are not hungry enough to be angry", he said.

Kuti's argument centres on the idea that desperation can create pressure for change, while small interventions can sometimes take the edge off that desperation. A person who is struggling to feed a family, pay rent or meet other basic needs may have little time or energy to challenge the system responsible for those difficulties.

The musician's comments also touch on a wider question about poverty and temporary relief. Financial assistance can provide immediate help to someone who is struggling, but it does not necessarily change the circumstances that keep that person dependent on assistance.

In Kuti's view, repeatedly providing short-term relief without tackling the underlying problems could leave people stuck in the same situation. They may get enough help to make it through another day, but not enough to change their circumstances permanently.

His remarks therefore put the focus on the difference between helping people survive and creating conditions that allow them to move out of poverty. While occasional assistance can ease hardship in the short term, Kuti believes it can also reduce the level of frustration that might otherwise push people to demand broader economic and social changes.

The point he raised was ultimately about what happens when poverty is managed rather than solved. For him, keeping people just above the level of desperation may prevent the kind of anger that could lead to stronger demands for change.
