37 Niger Miners’ D£aths: Adeyanju Vows To Expose Those Involved And Any Cover-Up

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has made it clear that he will not stay silent if there is any attempt to hide wrongdoing in the investigation into the d£.aths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Niger State.

Adeyanju is serving on the independent committee looking into the d£.aths, and he said his role on the panel is closely tied to the interests of those who lost their lives.

For him, the investigation should not simply be about going through the motions or producing a report at the end of the process. He said the people who d!ed must remain at the centre of the exercise, and any wrongdoing uncovered must be properly addressed.

Speaking about why he accepted a place on the committee, Adeyanju said he sees himself as representing the v!ctims and intends to make sure their interests are not pushed aside during the investigation.

“I feel that I am on that committee to serve the interests of those who have been mu.rdered br.utally and gruesomely mu.rdered. So, I am there to represent the victims, and I will make sure there is no cover-up or that nobody tries to suppress any wrongdoing; if they try to do so, I will expose them.”

His position puts the focus on what happens during the investigation and whether the committee will be allowed to examine the matter without interference.

Adeyanju's statement also makes clear that he intends to speak out if he believes information is being withheld or if there is an attempt to prevent wrongdoing from being properly examined.

The lawyer's comments come as the committee begins its work on the deaths, with attention expected to remain on what happened to the 37 suspected miners and the events surrounding their deaths.

Rather than speaking broadly about the investigation, Adeyanju's message was direct: his priority, as he described it, is to represent the victims and ensure that any wrongdoing that comes to light is not buried.

He also drew a clear line on the possibility of a cover-up, saying he would expose any such attempt rather than remain silent.

The investigation will therefore place Adeyanju alongside the other members of the committee as they examine the case. For him, however, the responsibility goes beyond simply being part of the panel. His comments suggest that he intends to use his position to push for the interests of those who died to remain central to the process.
