Nigerian comedian and preacher Woli Arole has urged people to be more careful before forming opinions about other people's lives, particularly when the information comes from social media.
His comments followed Peter Okoye's recent revelations about his wife, Lola Omotayo, and some of the difficulties he says she faced within his family during the early years of their relationship.
Peter recently shared another part of his account of the events surrounding his relationship with Lola. According to him, his late mother was unhappy about the relationship after Lola became pregnant. He also alleged that some of his brothers wanted Lola to terminate the pregnancy and claimed that an email was created to make her look bad.
Those claims have brought fresh attention to Lola's experience and, more importantly, to the way she was viewed by some people during the years of tension surrounding P-Square.
Woli Arole pointed to the change in attitude among some members of the public who had previously criticised Lola. He noted that some of those same people were now apologising to her after hearing Peter's account of what happened.
He wrote:
“I see a lot of people now saying, ‘Lola, we are sorry’, same people that judged and castigated her. See, listen, don’t be too quick to judge, especially on social media.
A lot of wrong narratives that people follow, and this has damaged reputations and lives!!
Be careful on this street of social media”.
For Woli Arole, the situation is an example of how easily people can settle on a version of events without knowing everything that happened behind closed doors.
Lola's name has occasionally appeared in discussions surrounding P-Square because of her marriage to Peter, but the issues between Peter, Paul and their elder brother, Jude Okoye go far beyond their respective marriages. The twins' relationship has gone through several difficult periods over the years, eventually leading to another major split after their reunion.
Jude has also become a central figure in Peter's recent revelations because of his former role as manager of P-Square. Peter has made several allegations concerning the group's finances, royalties and events that contributed to the breakdown of their relationship. Jude has disputed some of the claims and has given his own account of the issues.
Peter's latest revelations, however, have shifted some attention towards events that happened much earlier, particularly the period when he and Lola were starting their relationship.
Peter and Lola eventually got married and have children together. Their relationship has therefore existed alongside the long-running issues within the Okoye family, making the latest revelations personal as well as connected to the wider P-Square story.
Woli Arole did not attempt to settle the disagreement between the brothers. Instead, his message focused on the danger of reaching conclusions about people based on incomplete information.
His comments also raise a broader point about the way private family disputes are discussed publicly. Once a personal disagreement becomes a subject of social media discussion, people who were not present when events happened can easily form strong opinions from limited accounts.
That appears to be what Woli Arole was cautioning against. His reference to people now saying, “Lola, we are sorry”, suggests that some of those who once blamed Peter's wife are reconsidering their earlier position after hearing a different side of the story.
Peter's allegations remain his account of what happened, while the people mentioned in those claims have their own perspectives. For that reason, the full circumstances surrounding the events involving Lola and the Okoye family cannot be established simply from one person's account.
Still, Woli Arole's message is straightforward: people should be careful about judging others when they do not know the complete story.
The renewed discussion has also placed Lola back in a part of the P-Square story that extends beyond music. While Peter, Paul and Jude have spent years dealing with disagreements over their family and professional relationship, the latest revelations have brought attention to the personal experiences of those closest to them as well.
For now, Woli Arole's advice is less about choosing a side and more about taking a step back before making conclusions. His warning is that what appears to be the complete story online may only be one part of what actually happened.
