"Without Lati, There’s No Davido" - The Friend Davido Says Made His Music Journey Possible

For many people, success is often linked to talent, hard work and opportunity. But for Davido, one person holds a special place in the story behind his rise to stardom. The award-winning singer has spoken about the unwavering support he received from his childhood friend, Lati, describing him as someone whose presence changed the course of his life.

While chatting during a livestream with content creator Carter Efe, Davido took a trip down memory lane, recalling how their friendship grew stronger during one of the most difficult periods of his life following the death of his mother.

According to the singer, Lati was more than just a family acquaintance. He had worked for Davido's late mother and remained close to the family even after her passing. However, things eventually changed, forcing Lati to leave the family home.

Remembering those moments, Davido said:

"Without Lati, there’s no Davido.

Lati used to work for my mum. My mum passed, you know, Lati used to work for my mum. So when my mum passed, you know, Lati stayed around. And then when my mum passed, my step mum came, chased Lati away from the house," he recalled.

Despite no longer living around the family, Davido explained that Lati never walked away from him. Instead, he continued to encourage his interest in music at a time when those studio sessions were only dreams waiting to become reality.

The singer revealed that Lati would secretly take him out just so he could spend time in the recording studio. According to Davido, those trips became some of the earliest building blocks of the career that would later make him one of Africa's biggest music exports.

"Lati would sneak me in his car, go to the studio… He used to do music and DJ. So then he would carry me to the studio."

For Davido, those rides were far more than simple outings. They offered him the chance to stay close to the music he loved and gave him an opportunity to learn, grow and keep chasing his dream long before fame came calling.

His recollection also shines a light on the value of loyalty and genuine friendship. While many people know Lati today as someone constantly around the singer, Davido made it clear that their relationship was built years before sold-out concerts, chart-topping songs and international recognition.

The music star's story serves as a reminder that behind many successful careers are people whose names may not always make the headlines but whose support leaves a lasting impact. For Davido, Lati is one of those people.

Even after becoming one of the continent's most celebrated artists, Davido still credits his longtime friend for standing by him when it mattered most. Looking back on those early years, he left no doubt about how important Lati's role has been, saying simply, "Without Lati, there’s no Davido."
