Popular Nigerian content creator and actress Oluwabukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, better known as Kiekie, has opened up about the difficulties creatives sometimes face while producing content in public spaces.
According to her, filming outdoors can come with unexpected security concerns, confrontations and expenses that can significantly increase production costs.
Kiekie shared one of her experiences while speaking during a panel at the QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit 2.0 in Lagos.
The event brought together professionals to discuss creativity, culture and the future of Nigeria's creative industry.
She recalled shooting a brief video around Obalende and said the situation became tense after the production was completed.
She explained that a group of people blocked the vehicle and demanded payment before allowing the team to leave.
The amount initially requested, according to Kiekie's account, was N1 million, but after negotiations and appeals, she eventually paid about N700,000.
The incident left her frightened, particularly because she said a large crowd had gathered around the location. Although the video itself was only about a minute long, the unexpected payment became part of the cost of creating the content.
Kiekie said the experience made her realise how vulnerable creators can feel when working in unfamiliar public environments.
She also described another production experience at Kara, around the Berger area, while creating content for Ileya. On that occasion, she said she had to arrive with security personnel to make it possible to film without disruption.
Despite the content lasting less than two minutes, she estimated that nearly N500,000 was spent on security.
Kiekie explained that having security helped her work faster and gave her a greater sense of safety. However, she noted that such additional expenses can become a burden for creatives, especially when the actual production is short but the supporting costs are high.
The content creator further recalled a production in Abeokuta where equipment was reportedly seized, leading to a confrontation involving members of the production team.
She said the experience showed how quickly a routine shoot can become difficult when creatives lack a safe and predictable environment in which to work.
Kiekie's account highlights a wider challenge for Nigeria's growing digital economy. Content creators depend heavily on public locations, yet access, security and unforeseen demands can make ordinary shoots expensive and stressful.
A more supportive environment, she suggested, would allow creatives to spend less time dealing with disruptions and more time developing quality work.
Kiekie has built a career across digital content, television, fashion, acting and production. Her work has earned recognition at events including the Trendupp Awards and the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards, establishing her as one of the prominent personalities in Nigeria's online entertainment space.
