Nigerian comedian and skit maker Josh Alfred, popularly known as Josh2Funny, has weighed in on the growing debate surrounding so-called “brain-rot” content and the emergence of social media personalities with limited formal education.

The conversation gained attention after rapper YCee described the trend as the “Olodo Uprising,” a phrase that generated discussions about the quality of content being consumed and promoted online.

However, Josh2Funny offered a different perspective, arguing that comedy should not necessarily be judged by conventional standards of intelligence or academic sophistication.

Speaking during an interview with media personality Nedu Wazobia, the comedian described the phenomenon as both positive and negative.

According to him, social media has created opportunities for people who may not have traditional educational qualifications to build successful careers through entertainment.

Josh2Funny also reflected on his own early career, recalling his popular “Mama Felicia” character. He acknowledged that the character was not designed around sophisticated dialogue or carefully structured comedy. Instead, its appeal came largely from its simplicity and exaggerated humour.

He argued that this type of entertainment should not automatically be dismissed simply because it does not appeal to a particular section of society.

The comedian further pointed to the evolution of Nollywood, noting that comedy and other forms of seemingly simple entertainment have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s creative economy.

In his view, entertainment does not always have to be intellectually demanding to have commercial or cultural value.

Josh2Funny also defended young influencers who have become successful despite lacking university degrees or strong formal education.

He used social media personality Peller as an example, suggesting that his popularity demonstrates how digital platforms have changed the traditional route to fame.

He noted that social media has made the private lives and personalities of content creators much more visible, exposing them to both admiration and criticism.

According to him, people who become successful without following conventional educational paths can easily become targets of online trolling.

The comedian questioned whether a person should be judged negatively simply because they cannot speak polished English or do not possess a university qualification.

For him, the ability to entertain, create opportunities and earn a living should also be recognised as a form of success.

Josh2Funny’s comments have added another perspective to the ongoing discussion about the changing Nigerian entertainment landscape.

While critics continue to question the quality of some viral content, his position highlights the fact that social media has opened doors for creators who may previously have struggled to find a platform.

The debate ultimately raises broader questions about education, creativity, entertainment and what society considers valuable in the digital age.
