Nollywood is set to bring a significant chapter of Igbo history to the big screen with Properties of the Gods, a historical drama exploring the origins and realities of the Osu caste system.
The movie is scheduled for nationwide cinema release in Nigeria on September 4, 2026, and features a strong ensemble of veteran actors, contemporary stars and late Nollywood icons.
Produced by Joseph Okechukwu, popularly known as King Joe, the film takes audiences back to the 18th century to examine how historical beliefs and traditional practices contributed to the creation of the Osu system and the treatment of certain individuals as outcasts.
Exploring The Origins Of The Osu System
At the heart of Properties of the Gods is an attempt to revisit the historical circumstances surrounding the Osu caste system in Igbo society.
The film travels back in time to recreate a period when certain individuals were labelled Osu because of beliefs and practices surrounding traditional religious institutions.
Through its historical narrative, the production examines how inherited social identities could influence people’s lives, relationships and position within their communities.
Rather than simply presenting the Osu system as a historical concept, the movie focuses on the human consequences of such classifications and the conflicts they created for generations.
Love Faces Traditional Opposition
The central storyline follows a young couple whose relationship is tested by rigid traditional expectations.
Although their love represents a personal connection that transcends social boundaries, they are confronted by traditions and beliefs that threaten to keep them apart.
Their journey exposes the difficult choices faced by individuals caught between personal happiness and deeply rooted cultural expectations.
Family betrayal and social pressure further complicate their situation, creating a dramatic conflict that explores how inherited status can affect people who had no role in choosing it.

Powerful Cast Of Nollywood Stars
Properties of the Gods boasts an impressive cast led by some of Nigeria’s most respected actors.
The ensemble includes veteran actor Pete Edochie, Enyinna Nwigwe, Maria Chike Benjamin, Hilda Dokubo, Elvina Ibru, Linc Edochie and Zack Orji.
The film also features late entertainment icons Onyeka Onwenu and Cynthia Okereke.
Their participation gives the project additional significance, particularly as the movie arrives following the deaths of the two celebrated actresses and entertainers.
A Tribute To Onyeka Onwenu And Cynthia Okereke
Producer Joseph Okechukwu has chosen to honour the late cast members in an unusual way.
Rather than holding the traditional celebrity red-carpet premiere, the production team suspended the event as a mark of respect for Onyeka Onwenu and Cynthia Okereke.
The September 4 release date has also been designated as “Onyeka Onwenu Day” as part of the tribute to the late music and entertainment icon.
Instead of focusing on a conventional celebrity premiere, the team is redirecting activities towards visits to traditional rulers across South-East Nigeria.
The decision reflects the cultural and historical focus of the film while creating an opportunity to honour the region’s traditional institutions.
Production And Distribution
Properties of the Gods was produced by Joseph Okechukwu and directed by Uzodinma Okpechi and Okechukwu Oku.
Nile Entertainment is handling the distribution of the historical drama.
With its combination of historical storytelling and contemporary emotional themes, the film seeks to encourage conversations about tradition, identity, social exclusion and the impact of beliefs passed down through generations.
